Review
YOU HAVE ANOTHER BEST SELLER ON YOUR HANDS. I finally finished reading AGM2. Please dont let the word FINALLY confuse you into thinking that this book wasn't a page turner. (I was just busy) The characters really came to life as the story progressed. "THE GIRLS HAVE MATURED INTO WOMEN, SO LOOK OUT" I would hate to ruin it for others that have not read it to date. So I'll close with saying.............IF YOU HAVEN'T READ IT.....MAKE IT A PRIORITY. IT'S FIRE.......SSSSSSSSSSSSSS --amazon.com

I have anxiously been anticipating and unpatiently waiting for this sequel since I read AGM, without being able to put it down even to go to the bathroom. I knew it would be exciting and another awesome Sean Wright adventure, but I could not have imagined where Sean the Mastermind of Deviousness would take me in the sequel. I loved this book from start to finish and did not see the end coming. I am more than sure this book will not dissappoint. Cant wait for the movie. --amazon.com

I was excited before I opened the book to read and even more excited to see what Sean had in store for me and just like AGM I was hooked from the first page. As I continued to read I just knew I has every thing figured out but boy was I wrong. The twist and turns had my ass fooled and kept me guessing. The ending is what blew my mind away. I thought AGM ending was wild crazy and shocking. This ending had me stunned. They never lied when they said Karma was a bitch. AGM 2 IS A MUST READ! Sean Wright had done it again. --amazon.com

A Gangster's Melody 2
By C. Towns
" A Gangster's Melody 2: A New York State of Mind" is the sequel to Sean Wright's " A Gangster's Melody." It picks up four years later with Tiffany being incarcerated in prison for a crime she didn't commit. She vows to make Trayvon pay for what he did to her if she ever gets the chance. What happens next will leave your mouth wide open and Trayvon's world turned completely upside down!
AGM 2 was a fast paced read. There were many twists and turns that I did not see coming.Tiffany definitely grew up in this book. Gone is the naive girl we met in part one. Kudos to Sean Wright for bringing a new spin on things. 4 stars

Part 3? Movie? I will try my best to wait patiently but keep them coming. Definitely a book to recommend and an author to follow...Another job well done Sean!!!

Revenge is Best Served Cold...
By Amazon Customer
If you thought part one left you surprised, shocked, and with your mouth hanging open, then wait until you read the follow up, it doesn't disappoint!

4 years is a long time to sit in prison for a crime you didn't commit but it's even longer when you have revenge on your heart and mind. Since the day the judge slapped Tiffany with a life sentence, she's had nothing but time to orchestrate a way to destroy Travon, but her first mission is finding a way to do so; the only person she can rely on is her best-friend, Monica. Surprisingly and unexpectedly, Tiffany receives a visit from a stranger who happens to be a lawyer, Sophie, and she wants to take on Tiffany's case and when she does, a couple weeks later Tiffany is free and ready to put her plans in motion but Monica is against helping her, not realizing Monica has a plan of her own. Tiffany seeks the help of a friend, Michelle, who just so happens to know someone very close to Travon.

As you read through these pages you'll realize some people just aren't who they claim to be. Will Tiffany be able to extract her revenge on Travon? You'll never believe the out-come!!

Air Mobility, by Robert C. Owen

Global air mobility is an American invention. During the twentieth century, other nations developed capabilities to transport supplies and personnel by air to support deployed military forces. But only the United States mustered the resources and will to create a global transport force and aerial refueling aircraft capable of moving air and ground combat forces of all types to anywhere in the world and supporting them in continuous combat operations. Whether contemplating a bomber campaign or halting another surprise attack, American war planners have depended on transport and tanker aircraft to launch, reinforce, and sustain operations.

Air mobility has also changed the way the United States relates to the world. American leaders use air mobility to signal friends and enemies of their intent and ability to intervene, attack, or defend on short notice and powerfully. Stateside air wings and armored brigades on Sunday can be patrolling the air of any continent on Wednesday and taking up defensive positions on a friend's borders by Friday. This capability affects the diplomacy and the calculations of America and its friends and enemies alike. Moreover, such global mobility has made America the world's philanthropist. From their earliest days, American airlift forces have performed thousands of humanitarian missions, dropping hay to snow-bound cattle, taking stranded pilgrims to Mecca, and delivering food and medicine to tsunami stricken towns.

Air Mobility examines how air power elevated the American military's penchant for speed and ability to maneuver to an art unequalled by any other nation.

Is charitable giving more about satisfying the needs of the donor or those of the recipient? The answer, according to Friedman, is both, and Reinventing Philanthropy provides the essential tools for maximizing the impact of one's donations.

A fundamental review of air mobility
By John C. Taylor
Air Mobility is a comprehensive, detailed survey of American air operations. It covers not only air transport but the entire spectrum of aviation operations across all services. Mr Owen delves into the details of doctrinal disputes and technological developments that were important factors. He shows quite clearly that the United States was the only nation capable of developing the complex system that is modern American air operations and how the country accomplished that development. He is especially good at showing the roles played by the multitude of aviation personalities, including William Tunner, Joe Smith and George Kenney. This book should be read by every USAF airlifter and the aviation planners and executors of all services as well as anyone interested in how and why American air mobility is the succes that is demonstrated daily and worldwide.

The true story, originally published as Rocket Boys, that inspired the Universal Pictures film.

It was 1957, the year Sputnik raced across the Appalachian sky, and the small town of Coalwood, West Virginia, was slowly dying.

Faced with an uncertain future, Homer Hickam nurtured a dream: to send rockets into outer space. The introspective son of the mine’s superintendent and a mother determined to get him out of Coalwood forever, Homer fell in with a group of misfits who learned not only how to turn scraps of metal into sophisticated rockets but how to sustain their hope in a town that swallowed its men alive.

As the boys began to light up the tarry skies with their flaming projectiles and dreams of glory, Coalwood, and the Hickams, would never be the same.

Amazon.com Review
Inspired by Werner von Braun and his Cape Canaveral team, 14-year-old Homer Hickam decided in 1957 to build his own rockets. They were his ticket out of Coalwood, West Virginia, a mining town that everyone knew was dying--everyone except Sonny's father, the mine superintendent and a company man so dedicated that his family rarely saw him. Hickam's smart, iconoclastic mother wanted her son to become something more than a miner and, along with a female science teacher, encouraged the efforts of his grandiosely named Big Creek Missile Agency. He grew up to be a NASA engineer and his memoir of the bumpy ride toward a gold medal at the National Science Fair in 1960--an unprecedented honor for a miner's kid--is rich in humor as well as warm sentiment. Hickam vividly evokes a world of close communal ties in which a storekeeper who sold him saltpeter warned, "Listen, rocket boy. This stuff can blow you to kingdom come." Hickam is candid about the deep disagreements and tensions in his parents' marriage, even as he movingly depicts their quiet loyalty to each other. The portrait of his ultimately successful campaign to win his aloof father's respect is equally affecting. --Wendy Smith

From Publishers Weekly
Great memoirs must balance the universal and the particular. Too much of the former makes it overly familiar; too much of the latter makes readers ask what the story has to do with them. In his debut, Hickam, a retired NASA engineer, walks that line beautifully. On one level, it's the story of a teenage boy who learns about dedication, responsibility, thermodynamics and girls. On the other hand, it's about a dying way of life in a coal town where the days are determined by the rhythms of the mine and the company that controls everything and everybody. Hickam's father is Coalwood, W.Va.'s mine superintendent, whose devotion to the mine is matched only by his wife's loathing for it. When Sputnik inspires "Sonny" with an interest in rockets, she sees it not as a hobby but as a way to escape the mines. After an initial, destructive try involving 12 cherry bombs, Sonny and his cronies set up the Big Creek Missile Agency (BCMA). From Auk I (top altitude, six feet), through Auk XXXI (top altitude, 31,000 feet), the boys experiment with nozzles, fins and, most of all, fuel, graduating from a basic black powder to "rocket candy" (melted potassium chlorate and sugar) to "Zincoshine" (zinc, sulfur, moonshine). But Coalwood is the real star, here. Teachers, clergy, machinists, town gossips, union, management, everyone become co-conspirators in the BCMA's explosive three-year project. Hickam admits to taking poetic license in combining characters and with the sequence of events, and if there is any flaw, it's that the people and the narrative seem a little too perfect. But no matter how jaded readers have become by the onslaught of memoirs, none will want to miss the fantastic voyage of BCMA, Auk and Coalwood. First serial to Life. 10-city author tour. (Sept.) FYI: Rocket Boys is currently in production at Universal, which plans to release it later this year.

Memoir of a young man who builds rockets
By Mary Boyd
A warmly and well written memoir by a man who grew up in a small coal-mining town in West Virginia who with 4 of his high school classmates learns how to build rockets and enter a national science fair. Every chapter is full of funny and unexpected happenings. The story teaches about how science experiments are done, and how to face up to failure over and over until one succeeds. It also shows the power of a great teacher and how a community can rally behind individuals.

A Memoir about Finding Your Dream
By Michael E. Hill
"Rocket Boys" by Homer Hickam is his personal memoir of how he got started on his life's passion.

Our main character is the son the of the mine supervisor in Coalwood, West Virginia. Coalwood is a close-knit company town centered around the coal mine. The company provides housing, medical/dental care, education as well as employment. Homer's father is the defacto mayor of this town.

The Hickam family is dysfunctional. Homer's father is monomanically obsessed with his coal mine. Homer's mother understands and resents this. Her dream is to move to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina away from the grimy mining towns she has always lived in. The two parents fight their battle in words and silently, vicariously through their sons.

Homer called "Sonny' belongs to his mother. His older brother, Jim is more his fathers son. Sonny is the romantic dreamy type. Roy Lee is the popular best-dressed jock. The two brother despise each other and have as little to do with each other as possible.

When the story begins it is 1957, Sputnik has launched. On impulse Sonny announces he is going to build a rocket. No one takes him seriously. He's a lackluster high school student a fact his father never ceases to remind him of. But with the help of his friends and a dedicated teacher, he learns the fundamentals of rocketry. Their experiments in rocketry eventually engage the entire community.

Homer and his friends grow with their experiments as do their expectations in life. Along they way they have to deal with the problems of growing up teenagers in tough coal mining country.

This book is about young men finding themselves and rising above their circumstances.

A Great American Story
By William A. Sowka Jr.
Books like this don't come around often. It's a class act. The real deal. Uplifting, heartwarming, endearing, nostalgic, triumphant, and inspirational. It makes you laugh, it brings you to tears. You love the characters and sadly, when it ends, you miss them. The best part is that it is a true story. There is no wonder why, after over 500 reviews, this book averages 5 stars. To me this story represented all that is great about America: Family and community, dreams and goals, hardwork and creativity, perseverance and dedication, friendships, dedicated teachers and role models. If you are tired of reading oprahfied books that deal with tragedy, dysfunction, addiction, and abuse, do yourself a favor and read this book. It will show you who the REAL heroes are. It will uplift you and remind you of all that is truly great. It will also remind you that this greatness can come anywhere, to anyone, rich or poor. To have a dream and to "go for it" is what America is all about and what is exemplified in this book. This has become one of my all time favorites.

The Secret Life of Pronouns: What Our Words Say About Us, by James W. Pennebaker

In The Secret Life of Pronouns, social psychologist and language expert James W. Pennebaker uses his groundbreaking research in computational linguistics-in essence, counting the frequency of words we use-to show that our language carries secrets about our feelings, our self-concept, and our social intelligence. Our most forgettable words, such as pronouns and prepositions, can be the most revealing: their patterns are as distinctive as fingerprints.

Using innovative analytic techniques, Pennebaker X-rays everything from John McCain's tweets to the Federalist Papers. Who would have predicted that the high school student who uses too many verbs in her college admissions essay is likely to make lower grades in college? Or that a world leader's use of pronouns could reliably presage whether he will lead his country into war? You'll learn what Lady Gaga and William Butler Yeats have in common, and how Ebenezer Scrooge's syntax hints at his self-deception and repressed emotion in this sprightly, surprising tour of what our words are saying-whether we mean them to or not.

Review
"Is it possible for a psychologist to hear just a few words from you and immediately know what makes you tick? Could this psychologist use cutting-edge science to detect your inner desires from subtle patterns in your use of language--beyond anything you were conscious of saying? The answer to both questions is Yes. James Pennebaker is this psychologist and you really ought to read his remarkable book."--Daniel Wegner, Department of Psychology, Harvard University, author of "The Illusion of Conscious Will " "In this entertaining and sharply illuminating book, James Pennebaker shows that the words you use in everyday talk reveal surprising insights into personality, social relationships, status, leadership, sex, and human nature. I suspect that Pennebaker could decode the pronouns and the functions of words I write now to describe him in such a way as to reveal deep secrets about me! But I will write them anyway, and here they are: He is one of the smartest, funniest, and most creative

It's the Little Words That Count
By John M. Ford
James Pennebaker studies words. Originally interested in the beneficial effect of writing about personal trauma, he and his students developed software to analyze this writing. Their investigation soon expanded to include spoken conversations, emails, political speeches, and other language samples. They discovered that much can be learned from the short "stealth words" that we barely notice, but that make up more than half of our speech. "Pronouns (such as I, you, we, and they), articles (a, an, the), prepositions (e.g., to, for, over), and other stealth words broadcast the kind of people we are."

Pennebaker summarizes his trauma research, noting that "people who benefit from writing express more optimism, acknowledge negative events, are constructing a meaningful story of their experience, and have the ability to change perspective as they write." Searching for reliable linguistic indicators of these processes identified writing style rather than more substantive content words. The resulting LIWC software works well regardless of a text's content.

Using both research findings and representative everyday examples, Pennebaker reviews what he has learned. Topics addressed include gender, status and social class, personality, leadership style, deception, interpersonal attraction, and group solidarity. The author not only presents conclusions from his own research, but links to supporting findings using non-linguistic methods. Specific findings include:

- LIWC correctly identifies an author's gender 72% of the time using writing style. This increases to 76% when content words are included. (Human guesses range from 55 to 65%.)

- On detecting depression: "Sadness generally causes people to focus inwardly. Pronouns tend to track people's focus of attention, and when in great emotional or physical pain, they tend to use I-words at high rates. Sadness, unlike most other emotions, is associated with looking back into the past and into the future. In other words, people tend to use past- and future-tense verbs more when they are sad or depressed compared to other strong emotions."

- "No system has ever been shown to reliably catch liars at rates higher than 65 percent. And even those with hit rates in that neighborhood (including me) have done so in highly controlled and artificial circumstances."

- "Linguistic style matching" across nine categories of function words occurs within the first 15 to 30 seconds of an attentive conversation. It is generally beyond conscious awareness. LSM profiles can predict a number of things better than chance, including whether a "speed dating" couple will pursue a further relationship after their initial four-minute discussion.

Pennebaker clearly wants to share, not just his insights, but the methods used to achieve them. Much of his research was done collaboratively, not just with students and fellow researchers, but with public figures, professionals in other fields, and anyone else with interesting documents. Readers are pointed to web sites that let them experiment with Pennebaker's techniques and a version of his LIWC software is available for more in-depth investigations. An appendix includes "A Handy Guide for Spotting and Interpreting Function Words in the Wild."

This book is an accessible summary of James Pennebaker's work with helpful citations of similar research by others. It serves as a guide to more technical discussions of text analysis through an extensive Bibliography and References section--and pointers to downloadable research reports from the author's web site. Interested readers might also enjoy Roderick Hart's Campaign Talk or one of the other related books the author mentions.

Science Writing at its Best
By Susan Woodward
Provoked by the reviews in the WSJ and NYTs, I bought this book while I was away. It was there when I got home and disrupted my readjustment to local time by keeping me up late.

The writing is clear and lively. There are appealing little eruptions of playfulness. The story is put together from lots of research findings from the author and his buddies and probably some enemies. Here's a tiny sample of riveting facts you will learn:

If you ask people to fill out a survey, they use more "I" words (I, me, mine) if you put a mirror in front of them. 2. People believe that women talk more than men. Not true, the numbers say we all talk the same amount, but women use 12% more pronouns. 3. Shakespeare's characters, including the women, all talk like men. Woody Allen's all talk like women. 4. Writing about emotional topics improves the physical and emotional health of those who do it.

Even the notes at the end are worth reading. Only here do you learn that defendants who use "I" a lot are more likely to be innocent, but "me" is used more by the truly guilty, and get suggestions for further reading like "The Psychology of Secrets" and "Strangers in a Strange Lab" (argh, but yes I will buy it).

It must be thrilling to be a Pennebaker student or colleague. He is so engaging, he loves them so much.

Information That Can't Be Used?
By Ohioan
First, I enjoyed reading much of the information in this book, particularly the parts on who uses the "I" pronoun, when and why; and who uses "we" and when and why.

Second, the information could and should have been presented in a much shorter book, whose impact would have been stronger for being more succinct. There's a lot of repetition here and a lot of padding.

Third, there's something about this book and the information in it that I find unsatisfying. That's this: the articles, prepositions, and pronouns that signify where the speaker ranks in status, that signify whether the person is telling the truth or not, that signify whether the person is up to no good or not, that signify whether the person loves the one being spoken to -- these small words, we're told over and over, go by us so quickly that we can't grasp how many times they were used. The little words just don't register in our brains. It takes a computer program, we're told, to analyze the percentage of usage of these words. So, then . . . this book merely presents information. It doesn't provide tools with which we as listeners can assess what we're hearing. I found that dissatisfying.

The author didn't promise that I would be able to use what I learned, so I can't say there was deceit involved: there wasn't. And, despite the fact that I apparently can't use this knowledge, I still found the information interesting. Intriguing, even. So I am glad that I read this book, and I do recommend it, with the caveats listed above.
