Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of February 2016: An alchemical collusion—and sometimes collision—between the forces of magic and science, Anders’ novel swirls together fantasy and sci-fi into an often absurd but never slight modern tale of a witch and a tech genius who grow up together, grow apart, and finally have to save the world. This book throws a lot at the reader: coming-of-age and real adulthood, talking cats and two-minute time machines, assassins and venture capitalists, hilarity and hefty philosophy, technology and Nature. But Anders’ clever writing propels the story through its twists and turns, delivering a mesmerizing, thoughtful, and poignant novel that has “award winner” written all over it. --Adrian Liang

From School Library Journal
Social outcasts Patricia and Laurence have been friends since they were young, when they dodged cafeteria food that was thrown at them. But when Laurence, a supercomputing genius, finds out that Patricia can talk to birds, even he isn't sure if their friendship will last. Fast forward a few years and Laurence is working for a billionaire who wants to create a machine that allows for intergalactic travel to save humans after they have destroyed their own world. Patricia, meanwhile, has honed her magic skills at a witch academy and is now wandering the city healing people when she isn't supposed to. With the help of smart devices, Patricia and Laurence find love, but the looming end of the world tests their relationship. Give to readers who don't mind a bit of quirky romance like Rainbow Rowell's Eleanor & Park mixed in with their fast-paced Daniel H. Wilson-esqe futuristic science fiction. Patricia and Laurence are awkward, lovable, smart, and dorky, and readers will cheer for them to save the world hand in hand. VERDICT Perfect for fans of The Big Bang Theory, this novel has plenty of appeal for readers of fantasy, science fiction, and apocalyptic fiction.—Sarah Hill, Lake Land College, Mattoon, IL

Odd

Save your money. Definitely not worth $12. Moderately interesting premise. In a nutshell the plot is uninformed good vs uninformed good. The twist near the end is obvious. The ending makes no sense.

but find myself severely disappointed. I read the first 22-24 pages
By Amazon Customer
I bought this book several months ago and finally got around to picking it off my bookshelf. Now I have regrets.

I did not get very far, but find myself severely disappointed. I read the first 22-24 pages, and decided that I could go no farther. The biggest surprise for me is that this book is not designated Young Adult (as far as I can tell. And since one of the blurbs on the back mentions the word sexy, I really didn't think it would be YA).

This book reads like a 5th to 8th grader wrote it via streaming consciousness. There are so many disjointed thoughts and extremely unrealistic interactions...in the first 24 pages.

The main character gets lost in the woods, and once she is found by her parents, they immediately begin a crazy stream of ranting at her. The first thing her mother tells her is: "You nearly scared us to death. We've been searching, along with all of the neighbors. I swear you must think my time is worthless. You've made me blow a deadline for a management productivity analysis."

What the hell? What parent would speak to their child this way after organizing a neighborhood search party to look for her? The dialogue goes, just as inexplicably, in similar fashion. I read a few passages to people at work. I had things thrown at me.

I cannot in good conscience recommend this book to anyone.

Unique and weird in the best possible way
By Margaret
This book mixes so many familiar sf ideas together in such a unique and weird way--and I mean that in the best way possible.

The novel opens with six-year-old Patricia discovering she can talk to birds. Then there's a jump in time and we meet Laurence, a bullied middle-schooler who has created a watch that can jump 2 seconds into the future, and he's also working on AI with a computer he created in his closet. Patricia goes to the same school as he, and is also bullied. When he hires her to convince his parents she's his 'hiking' friend, their lives take a turn, and are forever after entwined.

Oh, and there's also the assassin school counselor who's trying to take them both out because he claims they bring on the apocalypse in the future.

The first 116 pages take place in this middle-school Hell, but the rest of the novel takes place when they're both adults. They went their separate ways at the end of middle school, but now, as adults, they 'accidentally' keep meeting, again and again. Patricia is a member of a witch society, and Laurence is creating a machine that will transport people to another planet if the earth collapses.

This novel is a love story, an apocalypse story, an AI story, a magic story. Oh, and also philosophical. Take some of these lines:

""Well," Patricia said. "A society that has to burn witches to hold itself together is a society that has already failed, and just doesn't know it yet."" (This one probably needs to go up on my writing board)

""I don't actually think that ethics are derived from principles. At all." Patricia scooted a little closer again and touched his arm with a few cool fingertips. "I think that the most basic thing of ethics is being aware of how your actions affect others, and having an awareness of what they want and how they feel. And that's always going to depend on who you're dealing with.""

This novel would be a great pick for a University Freshman class. Or a book group. So many discussable things.

The novel's not perfect, it can get a little messy at times, but it is unique and takes risks, and made me think. It's one I'd enjoy re-reading, and I've already recommended it to 2-3 people.

Review
Considerable research supports Miller’s examination of barbecue. It’s clear that his status as a historian along with his love of food (see his blog, Grog to Grits) make for a perfect combination. Indeed, he considers anything barbecue his province, from history and classic fare to restaurants, global variations, and barbecue in the arts and popular media. His presentation is chronological, thorough, and written for popular reading. Barbecue is tracked from just before (and after) Columbus’ discovery of America to its 1950s heyday. Although he doesn’t always follow standard recipe format–that is, ingredients, equipment, prep and cooking time, and instructions–Miller features a few directions with the caveat that the dish has not been tested for accuracy and taste. Any foodie will enjoy his foray into barbecue restaurants (seven in all, including Famous Dave’s) as well as his survey of world barbecue, which is about grilled meat rather than the sauces and rubs Americans are accustomed to. (Booklist)

In this, his first book, Miller explores a seemingly innocuous topic that is in fact steeped in so much lore and argument that even the definition of barbecue is hotly debated in some circles. This book, part of 'The Meals' series, outlines history, delves into cultural impacts, and also provides some recipes. . . .The opening pages explain that barbecue may be considered a food, a way of cooking, or a type of gathering. Miller addresses it as all three, thus massively increasing the book's scope. . . .[T]he author admirably describes barbecue from a sociological perspective, particularly its role in the segregated South where barbecue restaurants were one of the few places where races would mix. . . .Summing Up: Recommended. All undergraduate and culinary institute food history collections. (CHOICE)

Exploring the complexity of barbecue as a meal as well as a mode of outdoor cookery, Tim Miller marshals an array of sources into a lively culinary history that charts the diversity of an American fascination and its global connections. Describing in vivid detail the construction of barbecue pits and patios, preparation of meats that range from pork to armadillo, arrays of sauces and sides, great moments in barbecue history, and barbecue fandom and boosterism, Miller maps the barbecue landscape with enthusiasm and insight. Highlights include Miller’s commentary on the development and culture of barbecue restaurants, menus, competitions, cookbooks, and literature. In quest of an introduction to the history and culture of barbecue? Miller serves it up in style. (Bernard L. Herman, George B. Tindall Distinguished Professor of American Studies and Folklore, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)

Barbecue: A History is an engaging and comprehensive look at the curious twists and turns in the history of barbecue; it is particularly valuable for taking an international perspective. (Rachel Laudan, author of Cuisine and Empire: Cooking in World History)

Barbecue: A History is an immensely fun and informative book. Tracing the evolution of the word and the cuisine from its Native American origins to its international appeal today, Tim Miller is a winning guide to the foods, restaurants, and culture that make up the world of barbecue. Anyone who has ever sat down to a plate of ribs or thrown a steak on the grill will find something to love here. (Joshua Rothman, professor of history and African American studies; Director, Frances S. Summersell Center for the Study of the South, University of Alabama)

From Columbus at Guantanamo Bay to Reality TV, Tim Miller traces the entire history of what we call barbecue in all its meanings and flavors. No one has ever captured America’s greatest culinary tradition, its origins, influences, and recipes so completely in one volume. (Derrick Riches, barbecue and grilling expert, bbq.about.com)

Barbecue: A History examines barbecue's history and place in American society using both historical and contemporary sources. The book examines all aspects of barbecue, which includes both outdoor grilling and traditional slow cooking, from restaurants to home cooking, international forms of barbecue, the specific foods involved in a barbecue as well the concept of the barbecue as a gathering.

Fascinating Look at My Favorite Cuisine
By A.Trendl HungarianBookstore.com
Anyone remotely serious about BBQ has invariably watched one of those PBS series on grilling and BBQing and has learned a little of the history. This is particularly true of Steven Raichlen's shows. But when it comes to feeding that curiosity through books, mostly we consume tomes on technique and recipes. That's great -- gotta know the best way to smoke a large roast without drying it out or how to keep fish from falling apart.

Until now. Until Tim Miller's "Barbecue: A History (The Meals Series)." Miller's a historian, not a chef. While he obviously loves 'Q, he knows what a proper history is as well.

Miller gets through the types of barbecue, the American culture of it, and what BBQ is like globally. But he also has a strong focus on barbecue from the 1800s onward, when the American culture and industry really took off, from random stands to complete restaurants emphasizing some nuance of this great cuisine.

Particularly interesting are the stories behind known brands, like KC Masterpiece. A sauce was developed by a physician who sold it in Kansas City. The success led to a small, but growing chain of restaurants. Bad business decisions were made, fostered by a mix of ignorance of how to run a restaurant and family in-fighting, and now, today, there are no restaurants left. The sauce exists, of course, in several varieties. Miller tells the tale of Smokey Bones, Famous Dave's and others.

A fascinating read for the BBQ fan from start to finish. I fully recommend "Barbecue: A History (The Meals Series)" by Tim Miller.

Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes: Removing Cultural Blinders to Better Understand the Bible, by E. Randolph Richards, Brandon J. O'B

What was clear to the original readers of Scripture is not always clear to us. Because of the cultural distance between the biblical world and our contemporary setting, we often bring modern Western biases to the text. For example: When Western readers hear Paul exhorting women to "dress modestly," we automatically think in terms of sexual modesty. But most women in that culture would never wear racy clothing. The context suggests that Paul is likely more concerned about economic modesty—that Christian women not flaunt their wealth through expensive clothes, braided hair, and gold jewelry. Some readers might assume that Moses married "below himself" because his wife was a dark-skinned Cushite. Actually, Hebrews were the slave race, not the Cushites, who were highly respected. Aaron and Miriam probably thought Moses was being presumptuous by marrying "above himself." Western individualism leads us to assume that Mary and Joseph traveled alone to Bethlehem. What went without saying was that they were likely accompanied by a large entourage of extended family. Biblical scholars Brandon O'Brien and Randy Richards shed light on the ways that Western readers often misunderstand the cultural dynamics of the Bible. They identify nine key areas where modern Westerners have significantly different assumptions about what might be going on in a text. Drawing on their own cross cultural experience in global mission, O'Brien and Richards show how better self-awareness and understanding of cultural differences in language, time, and social mores allow us to see the Bible in fresh and unexpected ways. Getting beyond our own cultural assumptions is increasingly important for being Christians in our interconnected and globalized world. Learn to read Scripture as a member of the global body of Christ.

Review
"Whether rules over relationships or correctness over community, respective Western and non-Western worldviews may differ on appropriate conduct, discretion, and exceptions. Randolph and O'Brien write with grace and clarity. Though evangelical, they steer clear of moral or political agendas and give no hint of anti-Western sentiments; they even suggest someone write a complementary sequel: Misreading Scripture with Eastern Eyes. Their extensive range of biblical and contemporary samples makes this an excellent resource for confessional Bible study contexts or an entry-level textbook in undergraduate courses on biblical interpretation." (Martin W. Mittelstadt, Religious Studies Review 39, no. 2, June 2013)

"Written in engaging prose, Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes is a must-have for students of the Bible, and especially students of biblical apologetics. Any seasoned traveler knows that when someone visits a foreign country for the first time, he or she will be well served by a competent guide. When it comes to the social world of the Bible, Richards and O'Brien serve as tour guides par excellence." (James Patrick Holding, Christian Research Journal 36, no. 5)

"For many, [this] book will offer a dose of humility with hope. One is encouraged to admit, 'I don't know' while at the same time is spurred on to study the Bible more. Missionaries will be challenged to think more theologically and to listen respectfully to nationals who live around them. Theologians will be forced to consider how the adage 'context is king' applies to their own worldview. This is a perfect book to discuss within small groups at church or as teams on the mission field." (Jackson Wu, Evangelical Missions Quarterly, July 2013)

"This is an outstanding treatment of a complex and important topic. . . . This would make a good textbook for courses in hermeneutics or biblical interpretation, cultural studies, prolegomena, or theological method, as well as small-group studies in a local church. The book is written at a level that educated laypeople as well as pastors, teachers, and scholars will find helpful." (Glenn Rl. Kreider, Bibliotheca Sacra, October–December 2013)

"A politely confrontational book that bids you trade in your cultural spectacles and rethink how your worldview distorts your scriptural conclusions. Sex, money, food, self-focus, prejudices, and much more: developed with apt storytelling and enlightening examples." (Worship Leader Magazine, May 2013)

"A fascinating guide for any serious Bible reader! Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes reveals the 'habits of the mind' that might blind us to the Bible's intended message. Richards and O'Brien unpack the intricacies and nuances of cultural communication to help people better understand the Bible. To help you know--and live--the Christian life more faithfully." (Nikki Toyama-Szeto, Urbana program director, coauthor of Partnering with the Global Church)

"Richards and O'Brien open our eyes to the crosscultural nature of the Bible. Their book is a helpful resource in understanding Scripture on its own terms, without imposing our assumptions on the biblical authors and their first readers." (Lindsay Olesberg, author, The Bible Study Handbook, and senior associate for Scripture engagement, Lausanne Movement)

"The authors of Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes make a convincing case that those who trust in the Bible should (for biblical reasons) be more self-conscious about themselves. Their demonstration of how unself-conscious mores influence the understanding of Scripture is as helpful as the many insights they draw from Scripture itself. This is a good book for better understanding ourselves, the Christian world as it now exists and the Bible." (Mark A. Noll, Francis A. McAnaney Professor of History, University of Notre Dame, coauthor, Clouds of Witnesses: Christian Voices from Africa and Asia)

"Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes is an important book that comes along at a critical moment in global evangelical history. Helpful examples reveal our cultural tendencies and biases that could hinder a deeper reading of Scripture. The authors help us to recognize our blind spots and offer insight that honors the intention of Scripture to be read in the context of community. I am grateful to the authors for their effort to be self-reflective and engage in a critical examination of our engagement with Scripture from within Western culture." (Soong-Chan Rah, Milton B. Engebretson Associate Professor of Church Growth and Evangelism at North Park Theological Seminary, author of The Next Evangelicalism: Freeing the Church from Western Cultural Captivity)

"This is a revolutionary book for evangelical Bible-believers. If its readers end the book motivated to ask the questions it invites and even inspired to identify other possible misreadings because of Western cultural blinders that have not been discussed, they will be more ready to live out the kind of biblically faithful, Christ-honoring and God-fearing lives that they desire to and that the world needs." (Amos Yong, J. Rodman Williams Professor of Theology, Regent University School of Divinity, Virginia)

"Randy Richards and Brandon O'Brien have written a useful and enjoyable book, which makes excellent use of good stories to illustrate the points they make. The reader will leave the book with plenty of challenging questions to ask about approaches to Scripture. Interesting, thoughtful, and user-friendly." (Philip Jenkins, distinguished professor of history, co-director for the program on historical studies of religion, Institute for Studies of Religion, Baylor University, author of The Next Christendom)

Change Your Glasses
By Nick Peters
Everywhere you go, people are the same. Right? Oh there are some basic differences of course, but if you cut any of us, we bleed. Mankind really hasn't changed that much in all the years we've been around. When we read Aristotle or Cicero or Moses, we are reading someone was pretty similar to us and had the exact same struggles we do. We can regularly see it in their own writings can't we?

Or, maybe we don't. We just think we do.

Misreading Scripture With Western Eyes (MSWWE from now on) is a book that helps to expose us to the fact that people are not like us. The authors, E. Randolph Richards and Brandon O'Brien, show numerous examples of the way our culture misreads the Bible based on our Western presuppositions and that people in other cultures are quite different. This can be shown to be the case in Biblical times, but also in modern times as Richards has several examples in his book from his missionary service in Indonesia.

For instance, if you had an affair, would you feel guilty? Here in the West, you would. In Indonesia, there would be no guilt until everyone else said you did something wrong. What time does that church event start? Here, you could say "Mid-day" and most people would be there at Noon. There, you'd say "Mid-day" and most people would show up when it started to get hot. If you say "All people serving in the church must be eighteen", here it'd be a strict rule. Over there, there would be exceptions.

Much of this seems foreign to our experience, and for good reason. It is. One of the greatest signs of this is our intense individualism where we think everything has to be about us. There is even a chapter in the book on how people take a passage like Jeremiah 29:11 and make it to be about God having a personal plan for them. Somehow, all those Israelites that died during the attack of Nebuchadnezzar missed that.

The authors also bring out important realities of the system that was around then and is still around in most countries today, such as the honor/shame system and the patron/client system. Consider the story of David and Bathsheba. That is a story we all learn something from, but when it is read through the lens of honor and shame, all of a sudden several new facets of the story show up that the Western reader would not notice.

What does this mean? It means that there's further reason to drop this nonsense idea that so many have that all we need is to just have the Bible. Now of course, the Bible contains all that is necessary for faith and practice, but if you want to know all that it contains, you will have to study it well, and for many people, that is anathema, and is in fact part of the individualism that we have today. If God wants ME to get something out of the Bible, He will make it plain to ME.

When speaking about the patron/client model then, we actually make it seem like the problem is that God isn't doing what He's supposed to be doing. If an atheist wishes to discuss the problem of divine hiddenness, it's always that God is hiding Himself, instead of realizing that maybe God has revealed Himself and we are the ones hiding from Him. Skeptics today make the most outlandish claims about what they think God is required to do, such as a cross on the moon or everyone having the same dream at the same time, not aware that all of these are actions that would require further explanation through the social context of each culture.

The ideas that could be embraced if we would but study are monumental. How much different will you approach a text like Romans 8:28 if you realize that God is your patron working all things for good. Now I do have a small disagreement with the authors. I do think God does work all things for individual good. The caveat I would add is that some of that might not happen until in what I call, the after-death. Many people will die with suffering on them that I think God will redeem in eternity. I do agree with their collectivist approach and would contend that all those God will work the good for are Israel. The true Israel is really Jesus Christ and all who are "in Him" are in Israel. (I would even contend at this point that Romans could be about identifying who Israel is.)

I am not really including quotes on this because I find quotes to be inadequate for this one. There are such large pieces of thought that you need the whole context to see them all. I think the reader not familiar with the social context will learn something from every chapter, and I think many of us who already are will have our insights greatly expanded by reading this book.

The authors also do not resolve many of the difficulties. They present the scenario and they leave it to you and I to work out the difficulties in our own reading of Scripture and try to learn to read with new eyes. The authors also give points to ponder at the end to show how we can avoid doing what we've been doing. What questions can we start bringing to the text that will help us understand it?

Also, the authors do present points of application for us to consider, which can also make this book an excellent choice for small groups at churches. (All churches could be greatly benefited by having a small group that is based around this book.) The authors don't want to make this just a detached scholarly work, but they want it to be one that will engage us and force us to come to the text and see if we have been projecting our own culture on to it.

Many works in this field have been extremely scholarly, and I applaud those, but I am thankful now that when someone asks me one book I can recommend on the topic, I will not have to hesitate. MSWWE is on the top of the list!

In Christ,
Nick Peters

A must-have for your personal library!
By H. Kittleman
I couldn't be happier that I found this book. I've wanted to find a book that would explain the cultural context of the scriptures, and this book does that plus it explains what views we have that "go without saying" in our western culture. It does site examples of scriptures that are commonly misread because of our western assumptions and what's not explained in the scriptures because of the authors' eastern assumptions, but it's not a complete commentary - its main focus is to educate and inform so that we westerners can read the scriptures with an awareness of our unconscious assumptions and also to realize that when there's something in the Bible that doesn't make sense to us, it's probably because we're missing a key understanding of the cultural context.

The other great thing is that the authors' writing style is very easy to read. I find myself looking forward to reading this and making time to read a few pages as I can, and sometimes reading more than I intended. This is definitely a book worth keeping and reading more than once.

A complicated issue explained in easy-to-understand terms
By Nicole K
I had a basic understanding of what to expect from this book. The first half met those expectation, but the last half challenged me in ways I wasn't expecting.

I had always thought myself a fairly well educated lay-person. I understand the group vs individual, I understood that custom and society deeply influence much of what's said in Scripture, and how very important it was not to project my cultural values and norms onto it. I knew all the before reading this book.

And yet....

I find that I had missed the mark quite badly. Finding out how much of my western cultural up-bringing affected how I read the Bible was much like how I imagine a fish would feel suddenly realizing it was wet. They took me out of myself--my culture--for just long enough for me to realize it was there. I can not tell you how uncomfortable this made me! It was not the truth-y-ness of it that bothered me, but the fact that I can not help but see the implications of what they were saying every where I look in the [Western] church. (Much like a fish, once realizing it's wet, can not help but feel wet all the time!)

For this reason alone I highly recommend this book. Maybe you won't agree with some of what they're saying (because there are theological implications there), but you'll find that it will alter how you perceive the world around you. It will make you more aware of yourself and you'll see the "yeast" of our cultural "leavening" the church in ways you really never dreamed of.

I encouraged my husband to read this book too. He said it was very well done. He knew most of the concepts covered, but said it was done in a very down-to-earth style and would be an excellent introduction for people unfamiliar with this topic. He's already recommended it to at least one person he knows.

Highly recommended! Very much worth your time and money.

Extremely Timely Teaching
By Mark Valentine
Although most of these essay were written over eight decades ago, I found them to be extremely timely, especially the title essay. Whitehead shoots straight. He begins by stating that most teachers transmit "inert" ideas in their practice--they teach material that has to practicable bearing on providing any meaningful help to students.
He identifies three different stages or rhythms in educational methodology that happen in tandem and in rotation (I visualize a geocentric universe filled with epicycles of rotating moons and planets to illustrate the layers and rings of motion in teaching). He bases these stages on Hegel's Thesis, Antithesis and Synthesis, but he adapts them to the classroom and human learning. He calls these rhythms Romance, Precision, and Generalization. In Romance, the teacher needs to awake the sense of wonder and curiosity in a student's mind. This will provide the impetus to pursue the learning to the next stage: Precision. In the second stage, the student studies by drill and repetition the formulae, rules, and grammars that build upon a thorough knowledge of a filed. In the third stage, Whitehead declares that the student needs to move into a realm of Generaliztion. In this rhythm, the student makes connections, applications, and full, mature usage of the material and ideas.
I wish more teachers and teachers interested in developing their pedagogical methodolgy would take the time to read this short masterful book.

Changed my life at age 17 -- Thank you, thank you!
By Mehetabelle
The university that accepted me into its six-year medicine program required that I read this (and other) book(s) during the summer before entering their program.

It changed my life! It helped me to think about what I wanted to get out of formal education, how I wanted to develop my own mind through the rest of my life, and how to choose education that serves my objectives. This book made me a more knowledegeable consumer and user of education.

Powerful insights into the nature of learning
By Robert N.
Whitehead's essays are timeless. For the reader who instinctively feels that learning must be meaningful to be of value, Whitehead is a must read. This book is well suited to curriculum designers and/or instructors who feel strongly about including experiential activities. Whitehead's insights would be especially useful for decision-makers/sponsors of learning who must demonstrate a positive return on their investment. The first-time reader will have to overcome a sense of frustration that Whitehead's keen observations are as applicable today as when they were written nearly seventy years ago.

Review
“David Detmer’s Sartre Explained is undoubtedly the best introduction to Jean-Paul Sartre’s ideas available today. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in Sartre.”
—Matthew Eshleman, University of North Carolina at Wilmington

“Detmer explores the implications of Sartre’s work both for ourselves and for our world, and in so doing he makes Sartre come alive. Sartre’s most complicated philosophical doctrines are rendered comprehensible without sacrificing rigor, and his most counterintuitive political positions are shown to be more compelling than they are often taken to be.”
—David Sherman, author of Sartre and Adorno

“Detmer has managed to boil down Sartre without losing any of the flavor. This readable book, written in lucid and lively prose, straightforwardly addresses the hard, important issues in Sartre.”
—T Storm Heter, author of Sartre’s Ethics of Engagement

“Detmer’s Sartre Explained convincingly demonstrates how important Sartre is for us today, and places Sartre front and center as a giant of the twentieth century whose stature will be felt well beyond the twenty-first. Detmer’s deft treatment of Sartre’s most abstruse ideas, and his use of creative examples to tackle difficult problems and concepts, makes this a most welcome and inviting guide for those unfamiliar with Sartre’s work. Scholars will appreciate the depth of analysis and rigor.”
—Gail E. Linsenbard, author of An Investigation of Jean-Paul Sartre’s Posthumously Published Notebooks for an Ethics

"Detmer (philosophy, Purdue U. Calumet) introduces the work of French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-80), explaining how his writings on existentialism, his fiction and plays, and his political activism were all part of his attempt to describe the salient features of human existence such as freedom, responsibility, emotions, human relations, work, and death."

A superb primer
By Midwest Book Review
Philosophy is a foundational key to establishing our understanding of the world and man's place in it. David Detmer (Professor of Philosophy at Purdue University Calumet, and Executive Editor of "Sartre Studies International") presents Sartre Explained: From Bad Faith to Authenticity, a solid introduction to the ideas of twentieth-century French philosopher and author Jean-Paul Sartre. Written in terms readily accessible to novice philosophy students or even lay readers, Sartre Explained covers the philosophical movement called phenomenology, and the key ideas portrayed in Sartre's writings, including not only his philosophical works such as "Being and Nothingness" and "Critique of Dialectical Reason", but also his plays "No Exit" and "The Devil and the Good Lord", the novel "Nausea", and biography "Saint Genet". A superb primer, especially recommended for college libraries and as a textbook for introductory philosophy courses.

By Amazon Customer
This is a good overview of Sartre's contribution but I don't think it's suitable for a beginner as it claims to be.If someone with no knowledge of Sartre is given this book to read the most likely result will be confusion and frustration.Part of the problem is the author doesn't sufficiently define the Sartrean terminology he uses and there is no glossary. The author also gets a bit carried away at times with convoluted Sartrean explanations and insights. However the book is well worth mastering even with the help of other simpler Sartre texts. It is, I have to admit, a brilliant book.
For a Sartre novice I recommend 'Sartre' by Neil Levy as prior reading to this book, also a good Sartre dictionary would come in useful.

Clearer and easier to grasp than Sartre
By Barry D. Mcgrath
As I compared this book to the original source material, I was continually aware that this book was more to the point than the original.
If you need to understand Sartre, this is the shortcut you need.

Solid advice, but too specific on the format
By atmj
I wasn't quite sure what to expect in getting this book. As an experienced UI person, there is the constant juggle of documentation versus development. You can work with developers in an Agile environment on the fly, but what does QA test to? I was hoping this book addressed this new age question. It most certainly does not. But that is my mistake as this book does not suggest that will do that. Instead, I found a fairly basic book on UI, that deals with the earlier stages or more basic stages of UI development and how to document that.
Imagine you are a consultant or a UI person looking into a new website or application, or reviewing an old site to resolve some issues. It is this level of early documentation this book is discussing:
*Personas
*Task Models
*User Journeys
*Content Requirements
*Sitemaps
*Wireframes
*Usability Test Reports
*Funnel Diagrams

What I found surprising was the detailed instructions on how to create each of these items in various Software programs; mostly Omnigraffle or MS Powerpoint. There was some reference to Axure, MS Word and MS Excel as well, but they were in the minority.
Nearly half of this book (158 pages versus 332 overall) concerned itself with detailed instructions for how to create this documentation in a very specific format.
Since the Omnigraffle instructions were uniquely for an Apple system; 81 pages had instructions that I could not use. Having not had Axure available to me, another 15 were of no use either.

A concern, I have with all this specificity for a format, was, that it may not fit all circumstances. I get that it may been graphically pleasing to present information in this format for various situations, but it is also highly limiting. If you are consulting, their customer may have unique requests. Also if this graphical technique of representing data, was used by a prior consultant, it makes it seem unimaginative or non-customized for the clients circumstances.

Through the book, I did find sections that were repetitive, leading me to consider this a more basic text; however there were some great nuggets.
As an example in the section on Content requirements they appropriately point out the usefulness of testing with 5 users 5 times versus 25 users at the end, this is a time honored Human Factors tenant. Additionally in the Wireframe section, I liked the use of shading to portray visual heat in a section to help with the hierarchy of information. This is a simple way to be sure your locations of information and graphics are doing what they are supposed to.

In summary, this was a basic text on Human factors and User Experience documentation that will provide a framework and some sound guidance on how to design or redesign a site or application for a defined task. It also gives some very particular instructions on how to do this in a few very popular software programs.

Just OK
By Dave Edmiston
* Some interesting ideas
* Sometimes well presented, sometimes not
* Not well written

Before going into details, here is the impression that I got from these authors: "We are good at our jobs. We are going to tell you exactly how we do our jobs. Do your job exactly the way we do ours, and you will be good at your job too." I don't see this approach very often in technical documents, but I always cringe when I do.

I have a couple of problems with that approach. Besides the underlying assumption ("we are good at our jobs"), there is an even worse assumption that one size fits all. The assumption that the reader can apply these basic steps as a formula and reach the same results with any client is a scary assumption. Life simply doesn't work that way. In my experience, I can't necessarily apply the same techniques from one client to the next, let alone expect different individuals to apply the techniques the same way. My other problem with this one size fits all approach is that if it were actually true, then there really isn't anything unique about the individual designer--anybody can follow these simple steps and reach the same results--even a caveman could do it.

And I hate to be so critical (and you can see from my other reviews that I'm normally not so critical), but the writing is really disappointing. A decent technical editor (or even diligent self-editing) should have caught some of the basic errors and helped polish the tone of the writing:

"By using decreasing the size of each block, you can more accurately represent the number of visitors on each page."

I make that same mistake all the time. I start a sentence and then the phone rings or someone walks into my cubicle and I get distracted. When I resume the sentence, I don't quite remember where my thought was going and I end up with stuff like "using decreasing". That's why you have to self-edit everything you write, and then if you're publishing it for sale, pay a good editor to try to punch holes in it.

This book spends a lot of time with very specific "how to" or "click here" instructions with various tools. For example, the Wireframe chapter is 106 pages. Of those 106 pages, about 80 of them contain step by step procedures for creating wireframe diagrams in OmniGraffle, Axure, and PowerPoint. That's a lot of pages devoted to very specific instructions, which--if I follow them--will lead me to create wireframes that look exactly like the authors'. But what if I don't use those tools? What if I just use Visio or some other tool? Does that mean those pages are all wasted on me?

And what if I have a different design style than the authors (or what if my client has different tastes & needs)? If I follow these specific "how to" steps, I'm going to end up with a final product that doesn't fit anyone's needs.

I think it would have been a whole lot more useful to present more general concepts and fewer "click here" steps. Tell the reader all about what goes into a good wireframe, but don't tell me how to use the software tools to create the wireframes. I should be able to figure out the tools on my own.

I found it very interesting that a book on user experience design left out such an obvious human factor: the reader's user experience. What exactly is the reader's experience in reading this book? If the purpose of this book were to turn a job over so that someone else could do the job identically and replace the author, then the book serves that purpose pretty well (writing notwithstanding). Otherwise, I don't find this approach to be the right way to teach the topics to the audience.

Left me a little flat
By J. McKnite
The book's format was done in a step style and reads easily with a few editing errors. It gives practical instruction. But it was pretty specific on the tools to create a lot of the documentation which is only of use if the company you work for actually has and supports them. I've been in User Experience for 12 years and am currently a Lead Information Architect. I do wireframes in Visio and there was nothing about Visio in that section of the book. When I was a contractor, I found such a variety in tools and documentation that I think it's more useful to learn about concepts for creating good documentation rather than steps in a specific tool.
