Spooky Green Ghost Haunts His House!

Quite a few children's mystery book series have become classics. Most people are familiar with Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, and Tom Swift. Even the Boxcar Children are relatively well-known. However, Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators were well-written books that offered an intelligent, interesting and more contemporary alternative to many of the earlier classic series. Many people recall the earlier series well, but the Three Investigators series, which Robert Arthur wrote and debuted in 1964, has, for now, largely been overshadowed by the other series and generally forgotten. Fortunately, all of these books are available either from Amazon or from other internet sources.

This book is the fourth book in the series, following "The Mystery of the Whispering Mummy" and preceding "The Mystery of the Vanishing Treasure." This mystery begins almost immediately as the Three Investigators learn that a green-colored ghost has suddenly appeared in a variety of locations, beginning with the abandoned Mathias Green mansion and ending at a vineyard in northern California.

Soon the Three Investigators find themselves tangling with a mysterious Chinese man claiming to be more than 100-years-old, along with an array of thugs. What is everyone after? They are after an incredibly valuable piece of jewelry that could mean life to the person who possesses it. Someone understands the value, because the Three Investigators are threatened with death!

I enjoyed this Three Investigators novel. There are portions of the book that are relatively easy to figure out, but there are other portions that had to await the end of the book to figure out. The addition of the mysterious Chinese man is the most bizarre event yet in this series of stories. What the Chinese man intends on doing with the jewelry is even more bizarre. This story also had a lot of complexity and subtlety that I thought the author, Robert Arthur, constructed well.

If you are looking for mystery books for children and you are looking for an alternative to the stories I listed earlier, I highly recommend the Three Investigator series. I do recommend starting with the first book in the series, which is an excellent introduction to this series.

It said the silver and gold treasure was buried near the Twin Peaks of Otter, by a man named Thomas Jefferson Beale. He had chosen a secret location not far from Buford’s Tavern, in Bedford County, Virginia. Before he set out from Buford for a third expedition to the Santa Fe area he entrusted a strongbox with the innkeeper named Robert Morriss. He gave Morriss the instruction to keep it until he retuned and called for it. The box only contained some letters and three encrypted messages. But Beale never did return to claim the strongbox. After a time of more than twenty years and shortly before he died the innkeeper passed the strongbox with its contents to a friend. This friend of his, James B. Ward, then spent the next twenty years of his life trying to break the ciphers. He was able to solve one of them, the one called No. 2, which gave a detailed list of the contents of the buried treasure plus the general location of the vault. In 1885 Ward finally gave up and published all three ciphers in a pamphlet, wishing that someone deserving would be able to solve the remaining two. This has not happened. A scholarly analysis of the letters and ciphers, using historical records, has alledged the ciphers and letters could be a fraud. They could not have been written in 1821 since some words used, for instance, ‘stampeding’, were not known in 1821. Also the writing style seems to indicate that it was James B. Ward also wrote the so-called Beale letters and launched the adventure story in his 1885 pamphlet. But other historians and cipher experts disagree with these conclusions, pointing to the fact that more than one adventurous group of young men went west at that time, to explore the new territories just opened, to hunt, and to look for treasures. That Beale and his associates could have found gold and silver in the rich fields north of Santa Fe is quite possible.

Reading it as part of our daily devotions

My wife and I have spent decades daily reading aloud through the Bible together. Sometimes we consulted commentaries when we wanted to know more about a passage. We never thought about reading an in-depth work until I tried Chafer's Systematic Theology. We had no idea how extensive it was because we have a digital version, and that saves a chunk of shelf space since Chafer's is an 8-volume work.

We just completed the foward after several weeks of reading, which gave an overview of the set. Chafer warns that most systematic theologies ignore or omit major topics. These truncated versions leave the theology student less aware of important topics so that when he steps into the pulpit he is ill-equipped to properly minister to his flock.

Why would a retired couple from medical professions want to read a systematic theology? After all, a diligent study of the Bible is sufficient because the Word of God is living and active. However, it takes a great deal of effort to pull together all the great biblical themes. We can competently explain that salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ is the most important doctrine in the Bible. It is clearly taught in both the Old and New Testaments. In his forward, Chafter promises to take all those loose ends and bring them together in a systematic way so we can understand how all the Bible's themes fit together. We are now enthusiastically ready to begin the long journey through this work.

As an example of how a systematic theology would be helpful, a Christian Bible teacher, and our friend, claims that nowhere in the Old Testament is there any indication of humans promised eternal life by faith, and no indication of a physical resurrection, but he is greatly mistaken. He considers Enoch's rapture and Elijah's ascension to be special cases. What? Only two men have been taken into God's eternal domain? The appearance of Moses and Elijah on the mountain at Yeshua's (Jesus') transfiguration, shows them both to be alive, even though Moses had died on Mount Nebo looking into the promised land. And Jesus explained to the Sadducees who didn't believe in the resurrection (while the Pharisees did), that God was the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, that God is the God of the living and not the dead.

Chafer promises he is going to thoroughly cover the topics most systematic theologies either treat lightly or omit completely.

My biggest mistake was accidentally buying the abridged version of this and taking copious notes within that version. I so wish that I had purchased the unabridged version instead.

Goosebump look-a-like

I thought that this was an okay book for beginner horror fans, especially if you enjoy the Goosebumps line of books. However if you are someone who doesn't think too highly of Goosebumps then I suggest you avoid this title. For the most part this title keeps you on the edge of your seat, but it isn't too hard to put down. Even though the title lacks imagination the plot is pretty original. In conclusion if you are a fan of beginner thrillers like Goosebumps then I suggest you take a look, if not you shouldn't bother with this novel.

About the Author
Jay Wile fell in love with chemistry when his parents bought him his first chemistry set. Many stink bombs and a few explosions later, he was hooked! He attended the University of Rochester to study chemistry and, while there, became fascinated with nuclear chemistry, eventually earning a PhD in that field. For several years, he did research under the auspices of the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation while serving as an assistant professor of chemistry. Dr. Wile has won many awards for excellence in teaching and research. In addition, he has authored or co-authored nine books.
