About the Author

The late RODNEY D. STORTZ was senior pastor of Twin Oaks Presbyterian Church in St. Louis, which he planted in 1990. He also ministered in churches in Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Missouri. Educated at Covenant College and Covenant Theological Seminary, Stortz was involved in a regional radio ministry, "Oaks of Righteousness," and served as a board member for Trans World Radio and Covenant College.

R. Kent Hughes (DMin, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is senior pastor emeritus of College Church in Wheaton, Illinois, and visiting professor of practical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Hughes is also a founder of the Charles Simeon Trust, which conducts expository preaching conferences throughout North America and worldwide. He serves as the series editor for the Preaching the Word commentary series and is the author or coauthor of many books. He and his wife, Barbara, live in Wyncote, Pennsylvania, and have four children and an ever-increasing number of grandchildren.

Preface

This edition represents the fourth stage in a project that has gone on for almost 20 years. The first edition (1984) crystallized my teaching approach developed over the prior decade. I drafted it on an electric typewriter, an ancient artifact that many readers of this edition may not have seen except in old movies. The second edition (1990) was prepared on the first generation Apple Macintosh personal computer. Imagine a computer with 128K (not megs) of RAM and no hard drive, modem, or ethernet port.

During the life of the third edition (1995), the internet revolution has changed everything from world commerce to the way colleges and even high schools offer courses. Students increasingly find that their classes are accompanied by web sites that post syllabi, links to reading assignments, and gradebooks with scores from tests. Students may add or drop classes by computer and participate in electronic office hours or section discussions via e-mail. Homework may be sent in by e-mail or posted on students' own web pages.

It is appropriate, therefore, that this new edition for the second millenium should reflect the role of the World Wide Web. In writing this version, I often had two windows open on my computer screen—the word processing document for this manuscript and a Netscape portal to the rest of the world. Without leaving my office, I might jump from a library catalogue to a professional association's code of ethics to a government agency's data archive. I expect that readers of this text will often be seated at a computer alternating between reading from this hard copy and browsing the web.

Just as teachers and students have learned new ways of functioning on the internet, so social researchers have also adapted to this new technology. This edition reflects those changes in social research methods. A new chapter-length section (Appendix A) summarizes the variety of ways that social researchers are using the World Wide Web. In addition, all of the other chapters have not only been revised to update the material but also to include a new subsection called "Web Sites." Here you will find links to information that supplements and extends the hard copy on each topic.

It goes without saying that no one really writes a book (or a new edition) alone. This book presents a balanced presentation of research methods across disciplinary boundaries—both psychological and sociological, laboratory experiments and survey methods, quantitative and qualitative techniques. It offers a coherent, organizing theme, in this case, that of validity in its various guises-internal, external, inferential statistical, and measurement construct. The organizing theme is validity—the extent to which the researcher's conclusion can be judged credible. Validity is broken down into several components each of which is developed in one or more chapters including construct validity (both measurement and experimental), statistical inference validity, internal validity, and external validity. These validity types are then revisited as appropriate in the treatments of the several basic research approaches—true experimental, quasi-experimental, correlational, and qualitative. Ideal for professionals belonging to various psychological or sociological association or anyone interested in review or updating their current knowledge.

Dads - Buy This Book Parenting Book Before the Others!

I'm a new Dad - and have about 20 or so books on parenting that we've bought during the first couple of months of our daughter's life addressing so many different things we were trying to figure out. Then came along this book: How to Have Your Second Child First: 100 Things that are Good to Know the First Time Around. Jeez - I wish I bought this book first!

What makes this book so good? Where do I begin?

This thing is an easy read - and gives you a page or two with the details of the things you need to know rather than countless pages of endless dribble that you might find other books. As a new parent, my time has been pretty valuable, so it's been great to get some additional perspective from experienced parents in quick, digestible chucks - think Cliff's Notes for Adults.

The insight is awesome! Kerry Colburn and Rob Sorensen give answers that are good for both moms and dads. Throw the birth plan out the door, formula is totally fine, and dad's may feel left out at first are just some of the gems we learned. You'll also digest practical bits about wipe warmers, what is best to dress your kid in, and perhaps the best one: you can let your partner do things his/her own way (I bookmarked this page!:)). I tell you, just reading through this book has helped prevent issues for me and my wife before they have ever come up.

Someday I hope to meet Kerry and Rob - because I'd give them a big old hug for sharing their valuable insight which has made life much easier for us. Reading this book was time well spent, and it's a great resource we've gone back to again and again.

Do yourself a favor and buy this book before all of the others. You'll be glad you did.

GREAT Advice For New Parents...

I ordered this book for one of my best friends as her and her husband are getting ready to start trying for baby #1. There were so many things I wanted to tell her about what to do, and what not to do...what you REALLY need to buy, verses the gimmicky things that are just a waste of money. Well, this book takes care of that for me. I read through it myself first, and made some notations throughout the book for her, but there is some fantastic advice for new parents here, and it's actually pretty funny. I would have LOVED to of had this book 3 years ago when I was pregnant with my son. I'm sure it would have saved me a ton of money since I probably wouldn't have purchased the tons of clothing he never ended up wearing, or the bottle warmers (among many other things) that weren't necessary.

Overall, if you (or someone you know) are thinking about, or getting ready to have a first child, this book is a GREAT purchase. There's advice from not only the authors (who are a husband and wife team), but other couples with multiple children as well. I know, as a first time parent, it's hard to heed the advice of other people or friends who have already had kids, but trust me, what they're telling you is valuable stuff. Things you think your baby can't live without...turns out they can. Sterilizing everything your little one comes in contact with? Not necessary. And a crying baby is not the end of the world. You can either learn all this stuff the hard way like the rest of us, or heed the advice of this very helpful book. I absolutely recommend this.
