Thorough, Useful and Enlightening

While the author may apologize for posting the book's description in the review section, he should make no apologies for the detailed, thorough and extremely well thought out book he has penned. As an astrologer, I have sought to learn the many mysteries that this art has to reveal, no matter how trivial or arcane they might prove to be. One subject that has always nagged at me was the Mansions of the Moon. Since seeing the subject appear in Vivian Robson's classic "Fixed Stars & Constellations in Astrology," I have been intrigued, but have found little information outside of sources within Vedic and Chinese astrology. Even then, it would have seemed that the Mansions of the Moon would forever be shrouded in mystery. Until now.
Warnock has done an amazing job at collecting sources on the subject, reasoning out interpretations as well as making a practical guide for using it in your magical or astrological practice. The integration of classic sources with our modern world view is often a difficult task to manage, particularly with sources dating back several centuries. Mind you, this is not the touchy feely new age drivel that seems to be in absolute abundance in astrology these days. It is drawn entirely from traditional sources and presented in such a manner that makes it easily accessible to those of us who don't have a large breadth of experience in traditional astrology or medieval philosophy.
Seriously, astrology is an art that encompasses many facets of life reconciling the hermetic principle of "As above, so below," in the context of the mundane, for the purpose of electing a time to act or answering a question, not merely an egotistical interpretation of oneself. It is nice to see another author who "gets it."
After having read the book briefly, I am inclined to agree with the review previously penned by Deb Holden (whose "Houses: Temples of the Sky" is a book that I have found to be second to none on the topic). The presentation is practical and his sources thoroughly documented. I anticipate I will read this book many times over and I recommend you do the same. This is about as close to being authoritative as one can get.

This book is like a diamond: precious, authentic and what a treasure! The Mansions of the Moon is the missing link of the Zodiac: undiscovered, hidden, and lost in the western Astrological word. The author, Christopher Warnock, has done an amazing job putting together and writing this book. The content illuminates the mansions to the western world, explaining all aspects (from the mansion's significance in a natal chart to the practical applications of creating a talisman for each). A must have!

OVERALL, AN EXCELLENT BOOK

This is an excellent book for the beginner -- which is to say someone with basic astrological knowledge but little substantive knowledge of lunar mansions or Western occult history. While much of the content in the book quite properly comes from two historical sources -- Picatrix and Agrippa -- Warnock adds pertinent information drawn from his own experience, as well as a simplified method for talismanic magick. Although Warnock occasionally takes a schoolmarmish tone -- which some may find a bit irritating -- this is an excellent resource book.

About the Author

Ray Vander Laan is the founder of That the World May Know Ministries and creator of the Faith Lessons video series with Focus on the Family. An ordained minister, he holds the chair of biblical cultural studies as a religion instructor at Holland Christian Schools in Holland, Michigan. He and his wife, Esther, have four children and fifteen grandchildren.

I love a book that is hard to put down

I love a book that is hard to put down! This is a beautifully written memoir that challenged me on many levels to examine my personal path: to take more risks and live more fully. She writes from a purely honest perspective about life and death and a yearning to find inner peace. Her passion for cooking, the great outdoors, and always learning is apparent throughout the book. I hope she writes another!

Memoir with the right amount of plot

Myers' debut is a lovely, satisfying memoir. She captures an engrossing story arc in important time of life - somewhere after coming of age and getting over all the idiocies of your early twenties, but before reaching the calm of understanding what you will do and who you will be forever. The backdrop of an organic farm in California is beautifully drawn, as are the main characters. Hive-Mind made me want to be a chef, farmer, lesbian and poet by turns!

California author Gabrielle Myers earned her MA in English from the University of California at Davis and an MFA. in Creative Writing from Saint Mary's College of California. She is an Associate Professor of English at San Joaquin Delta College. Before this book she has had her poems and essays published in professional journals and literary magazines. Of note, her other book is on nutrition - The New Prostate Cancer Nutrition Book. Gabrielle is also a gluten and dairy free chef.

With Gabrielle’s passion for food, healthy nutrition, and other aspects of being a chef, one would expect this book to be a cookbook – and actually it is on of sorts. Instead of dished she offers appreciation of nature and the response to living and dying and that in between land of substance abuse and subsequent recovery.

Gabrielle’s synopsis sets the path for the story and deserves quoting: ‘Gabrielle Myers takes us on a Northern California idyll – an internship at the Tip Top Farm and Produce in Vacaville. Here, the beauty of the land – light streaming through fig branches, carnelian tomatoes exploding in front of rows of sweet peas – is tended by the mysterious frenetic Farmer and her companion, Baker. Together with their intern Gabrielle, the trio tends a landscape full with sustenance and life. Their days are filled with back-breaking farm labor and their nights are alive with the freshest, most creative meals imaginable. At night, Gabi lays in her yurt pondering her mother’s suicide attempt, her subsequent recovery form alcoholism and drug addiction, and her won struggles with substance abuse as she tries to redefine her relationships and perceptions. Gabrielle works on stories to tell herself to make it alright, while just up the hill another mind, busy as a hive, fights a storm of loss and sorrow that threatens to shatter Eden. A Fascinating Story of Science for the Layman

The Family That Couldn't Sleep tells the incredible story of a family from Venice who has suffered from terrible insomnia for generations. But this is no ordinary insomnia - FFI (Fatal Familial Insomnia) ultimately keeps it's victim awake 24 hours a day, until they slip into a coma-like state and die. This terrifying disease is rare, affecting only a few dozen families in the world, but that doesn't make this story any less compelling.

DT Max explains the relatively new science behind FFI (the disease was only formally identified a decade ago), teaching the layman the full back story and interesting tidbits of science without overwhelming. The story then evolves into the emergence of other, related prion diseases like BSE - or mad cow disease - in the UK in the 1990s and how the human form - CJD - so nearly became an epidemic. We also look at Kuru - the laughing disease - mysteriously affecting cannibalistic tribes in New Guinea, and the politics behind the science that led to the discovery of prion disease.

This is a truly compelling story and easy enough to follow if you have an appetite for science. While the history of FFI is the cover story, this book goes way beyond the curiosity of sleeplessness and delves into the bizarre world of protein mutation and it's affect on the human brain. Highly recommended.

it has most of the same loding options and usually a couple more. very accurate on prices. covers some areas better than lonely planet, more of a backpackers book. bad maps though. sometimes tough to get a good idea of a city.

Great Budget Backpacker's Guide

The Let's Go series is fun and irreverently informative. The Australia guide offers many budget insights and interesting facts about this great country.
I have found that the Let's Go books definitely cater well to the rough backpacker, but if you're faint of heart or looking for any fancy frills, this book is not for you.

Let's Go: Australia

Snow is rapidly falling down, creating a whiteout storm outside my dorm room window. It hasn't been higher than maybe thirty degrees Fahrenheit for some time now, and the ears and noses of students are bright red as they walk down Boylston Street. With this in mind, my desire to research studying abroad in Australia can't come as much of a surprise. Fortunately, with the help of Jake G. Cohen and his team of Let's Go researcher-writers my dream can easily become a reality.

Let's Go Australia: On a Budget is a guide whose intended audience is unmistakable even at first glance. The cover is designed to look like a cork bulletin board, covered with iconic Australian objects like a boomerang or their national flag, taped up Polaroid pictures showcasing things like Australian wildlife, people playing in the ocean, and a beautiful landscape from Uluru. There is little text aside from the title--which looks like distressed black spray paint--on the front, as the guide mostly relies on the images to draw the eye. The Associated Press quote on the back cover perfectly sums up the target traveler, stating that the guide is "for independent travelers on a budget, with an emphasis on whatever's hip, fun, or free." What makes this different than any other student guide is probably what makes it stronger; it reaches out to any independent travelers who don't want to empty their wallets in order to enjoy a new, exciting place. On top of that, the Let's Go series is "not your parent's travel guide," and is written entirely by experienced student travelers who travel on "shoestring budgets".

The purpose of Let's Go guides, and this one specifically, is to teach newer travelers how to go about a trip in Australia with the knowledge and experience of someone who has almost filled their passport with stamps and visas. One of the guide's biggest strengths is its straightforward style of relaying information. It explains all the ins and outs of any type of trip, whether it is for business, study, or pleasure, and within pleasure for both the leisurely and plan-happy traveler. Travel guides all boast their knowledge of a place, but Let's Go is unique: they break up countries into smaller sections (territories, in Australia's case) and have experienced researcher-writers take on an itinerary, so the places these writers talk about are all places that they have gone on the average student budget or found out about from a native Aussie. In Australia, one of the writers, Molly Faulkner-Bond, grew up in Byron Bay, so she was already familiar with Oz, as the country is referred to in the guide. Because these writers are writing about their own travel experiences, the guide tells readers how to deal with anything that could go awry, like coming across a funnel-web spider in wet places like Eastern Oz, or accidentally bringing food to the airport where customs is very strict.

The language is occasionally descriptive in that alluring way of making my mouth water for some traveling, and occasionally wit-filled and lightly humorous (for example, informing readers that 70,509 Aussies follow the Jedi faith according to the 2001 census, or that the kangaroo to human ratio is almost 3:1), and yet most of its writing is jam-packed with information. In the first several pages, it is an overview of the whole country, with many parenthetical references to the more in-depth sections, such as "To decide when and where to go, read below and see temperature and rainfall (p. 767) and holidays and festivals (p. 768)." I imagine this would be annoying if it happened throughout the entire guide, but it is primarily in the beginning, acting almost as a more detailed table of contents. Let's Go Australia requires a lot of planning to get through because not only do the researcher-writers take great care in their analysis, but also Australia lives a double life as a continent so there's a lot of ground to cover. In the end, however, it results in positive payoff for the traveler who can now choose a great, inexpensive vacation.

This guide would easily fit into a backpack or a larger purse and is surprisingly light despite the 782 pages heavy with information. It is certainly not a pocket guide, and would, in some situations, have to be left in the hotel room, but on the whole it would not be difficult to toss it into your beach bag.

Now, as a budget traveler, nothing would be more frustrating than paying for a really expensive guide trying to show you how to save money once you are on your trip. Let's Go Australia: On a Budget costs $23.99, which may seem a little steep, until you consider the amount of useful information. Tip boxes are peppered throughout, sharing words of wisdom like this gem about jaywalking¬ (which is especially helpful for Bostonians): "Brisbane police are quick to fine jaywalkers $200 or more for crossing without a signal. In this city, it seems, patience is a virtue." The sheer size of the guide in comparison to others is enough to show that it is indeed appropriate for a budget-conscious audience. That considered, it is also less expensive than many other Australia guides, with Lonely Planet coming in at $30 and Frommer's Australia at the only slightly more expensive $25. But, as is made clear by Let's Go and they way they take you around Australia, every dollar counts.

There aren't any pictures of Australia--color or otherwise--save for the cover, which at first glance seems an obvious weakness. But, what this guide lacks in pictures, it makes up for in a great treasury of maps. There are maps from so many different angles, some as close as streets, some showing the whole country, and some that even map out suggested itineraries for travelers based on which section they plan on visiting and different lengths of time. Needing to whip out an additional map often removes you from the traveling experience. With that in mind, I think this book is wise to include so many different detailed maps, because you look much less suspiciously tourist sitting somewhere with a book than you do with an unfolded piece of paper that is almost as large as you are. Historian writing sincerely about his own craft.

The book by Marc Bloch - ''The historian's craft'' - this book shows the limitations of a history as a independent scientific discipline together with its role in the society. Author discusses also the advantages of history, which was his great passion. I really appreciate this book and the author's style of writing. Unfortunately Prof. Bloch did not finish this book, because he sacrificed his life for his own country - he was a scholar and a hero. I do not agree with Prof. Marc Bloch at one point when he claims that human being changes with time. In my opinion this is not the truth and eventually I agree with such figures, like Thucydides and Niccolo Machiavelli.

Marc Bloch--veteran of World Wars I and II, historian, professor, writer, French patriot--entreats us in this spare volume to maintain our objectivity, to interpret history with the skepticism of the journalist and the scientific method of the researcher. He identifies some of the pitfalls, the improperly translated idiom, the anthropomorphism of time and place, and relying too heavily on the written accounts of earlier historians, as means by which the understanding of historical events can be skewed. And history must be viewed as a continuum, a rolling cause-and-effect leading from then until now and beyond, events which seldom fit easily into our need to categorize them by fixed dates. But then, historians already know these things, so of what value is "The Historian's Craft" today?

There is a poignancy to this book that Marc Bloch may not have anticipated from his moment in time, but looking back toward the era in which he wrote, the reader can see "The Historian's Craft" as Bloch's attempt to instill order and sanity into the turbulent and almost inexplicably surreal fall of France during World War II. I interpret this book as his salve, his struggle to maintain objectivity during the madness he observed as the Nazis overwhelmed his country. Older than fifty now, having earned the right to a quiet life in academia but refusing to leave his beloved France, Block joined the Resistance, fought against the Nazis, was captured, tortured and killed. And so, "The Historian's Craft" becomes a record to help us interpret Marc Bloch's life and the era of occupied France, as well as lessons in craft from a learned man.

Bloch wrote: ...a generation represents only a relatively short phase. Longer phases are called civilizations."

Everyone, at least once in their life, has questioned the usefulness of their career. Marc Bloch, a French economic historian, discovered that this moment could be inspired by a mere inquiry: "Daddy, what is the use of history?" Bloch's answer to his son's innocuous question provides the intellectual back-bone to his study: The Historian's Craft. In this book, Bloch's analysis provides students and professional historians alike with a how-to guide to history, but also, probably most importantly, a poignant defense of the craft itself.

Bloch attempts to lift history from its tradition of romantic storytelling, excessive specialization, and its preoccupation with politics, by re-aligning its practices within the broad realm of intellectual inquiry, most importantly science. "There is then," Bloch writes, "just one science of men in time. It requires us to join the study of the dead and of the living." While Bloc concedes that "human actions...elude mathematical measurement," Bloch argues that any intellectual endeavor that explains change over time is historical in its essence. Geology, for example, explains the processes of erosion and plate-tectonics, within the context of time. Thus, understanding the nature of the earth's crust, in relationship to the deteriorating effects of time, is the purpose of studying geology. In contrast to geology, Bloch explains, "it is men that history seeks to grasp." History like many other sciences, are tools for intellectual inquiry. When man is determined to be the subject in question, history, according to Bloch, is the most appropriate tool. The creation of a lake by a man-made dam serves as an excellent example. The inquisitor who is interested in understanding the events that led to the creation of the man-made lake would be better served by analyzing the economic, political, and social phenomena that led to the creation of the dam, rather than the invisible natural geologic processes that led to the creation of the lake. In this sense, history, in comparison to the highly respected intellectual pursuits of hard science, remains an important fixture in intellectual inquiry.

So Bloch has decisively argued that the subject of history is men. But what context should historians study men? Time, according to Bloch, "is a concrete and living reality with an irreversible onward rush." The harsh reality of this constant, influx- producing force provides the logic behind all major historical events. Thus, history cannot merely be a "science of men," or the "science of past," but is instead the "science of men in time," or man's evolution within the context of time. In relation to this, Bloch additionally believes that historians should "join the study of the dead and of the living." While many world leaders would like to make changes to certain contemporary societies, the cultural traditions of a civilization, which pull against reform, are deeply rooted in the fabric of the past. Thus, Bloch argues that man, "remains a more or less willing prisoner," to human institutions that developed throughout history. A historian or even more importantly a world leader that remains unaware of the controlling function of the past, will fail miserably in his or her attempts to improve the future. Likewise, Bloch argues that historians must also be aware of how the present influences our understanding of the past. Bloch believes that "the knowledge of the present bears even more immediately upon the understanding of the past." Bloch states that since historians do their work "backwards," from present to past, a false understanding of the present could lead a historian on a fool's errand in his analysis of the past. Thus, the past and the present, both functions of time, serve as the foundational reference points that all histories should be written from.

Marc Bloch, before The Historian's Craft was released, was captured, tortured, and executed by invading German forces in 1942. His contribution to historical literature and historiography has been immense and influential. The final intellectual testament of his tragically shortened life and the answer to his son's question: "What is the use of history?" has fascinated modern historians and students alike. Ultimately, Bloch left his historiographic masterpiece to future students of history as inspirational guide that acknowledges the characteristics and tactics of history as an intellectual endeavor.

Great, hilarious book!

I loved this book. I laughed with Lucy and I felt sad for her disappointments. Most of all, I enjoyed Keyes' writing style. Her chatty style made me feel as if I was conversing with a friend. Just like some of my real life friends, I sometimes wanted to bop her on the head and tell her to get a reality check, but that's one of the great things about this book - Lucy is an honest, real life person with real life flaws (and an addiction to pop psychology and men who treat her badly).

The book is about a single in London and her quest to find Mr. Right. The book starts off with a psychic's prediction that the boyfriendless Lucy is getting married in the next 18 months. Lucy doesn't believe it at first, but the psychics predictions with regards to her friends (who got their own psychic readings) started to come true. Lucy ends up meeting Gus, a complete loser, at a party. For some inexplicable reason, she is drawn to Gus' irresponsibility and drug-induced pointless chatter and dates Gus. She convinces herself that she and Gus are meant to be because of the psychic prediction and overlooks some serious character flaws. I won't spoil the story for everyone - while the ending is predictable, how she got there is not - but ultimately Lucy faces childhood demons about her father and realizes that she has a pattern to date men who have similar flaws to her father.

The book includes an interesting cast of characters - her selfish and bossy roommate Karen and her loveable roommate Charlotte, Lucy's workmates and Lucy's childhood friend Daniel. We follow them along as they navigate the complicated London singles scene, partly as friends, partly as "frenemies" (particularly Karen). Yes, we know who Lucy will end up with in the end, but the journey to that predictable ending was very enjoyable.

This novel deserves 4 stars. It is very entertaining, but at times, Keyes' dialogue is meandering and wordy - particularly Gus' dialogue. Aside from this tendency towards wordiness, this is a great light read, predictability and all.

Not Keyes' Best

Overall, this book is nothing but a light and fluffy summer read. While I found some parts quite enjoyable, I would not say this is one of Ms. Keyes' best novels.
The main character, Lucy (although flawed like us all) became a bit overbearing as the story progressed, primarily through her ill treatment of her long-time friend, Daniel. Despite the author's attempts at making Daniel appear as a flirtatious and womanizing character, it wasn't carried off very well. Throughout the story, I felt increasingly sorry for Daniel and wondered why he was wasting his time with someone who insulted him and pushed him away during her time of need. As an avid reader, I was not "roped into" perceiving Daniel as a flirt or as a womanizer and seemed to feel his agony at not getting closer to Lucy, despite his failed attempts. Rather than understanding and sympathizing with Lucy (our supposed protagonist), I tended to lean more toward finding out how Daniel was holding up in the story.
Gus, another character in the story I found annoying, seemed to just fill the pages with endless chatter and mindless thoughts. I,embarrassingly enough, flipped by some of the pages of the book just to avoid having to endure Gus' never-ending talk. Sad to say, I noticed that I didn't miss anything when I finally began steadily reading after skipping Gus' scenes.
Although things get righted at the end of the story -- an ending I really did enjoy and found it well-written -- I felt the 600+ pages of story could have been shortened. Gus' ramblings appeared to have taken up a lot of unnecessary space. This is a fluffy summer read, nothing to keep on the bookshelf.

Jane Austen meets the TV show "Friends"!

Having read Rachel's Holiday, Marian Keyes's latest book, I thought I should definitely read one of her earlier novels. I had been looking for a laugh-out-loud romantic comedy to read and Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married did not disappoint. What great novel! This book shouldn't be compared to Bridget Jones -- it shines its own light.
Lucy Sullivan has received the news of a lifetime: a psychic has predicted that she will be married within a year. The problem is that she has no idea to whom. Who is the lucky man? No one knows. Of course, the search for Mr. Sullivan will take some interesting and rough turns, for Lucy isn't exactly a girl with very high dating standards.
This is a great novel. The story is very reminiscent to a Jane Austen novel -- it has that heroine-looking-for-love-in-all-the-wrong-places-but-wouldn't-notice-the-true-love-of-her-life-if-it-hit-her-in-the-head love theme. I loved it. Also, it's like a more intelligent version of the TV sitcom Friends. I loved the neurotic characters. Lucy's roommates -- Karen, the bossy and high maintenance one and Charlotte, the ditsy and naive one -- are hilarious! As are Daniel (he seemed adorable), Megan and Meredia. I laughed so much with this one. In fact, I was given some puzzled looks on the train on my way to work. My only complaint is Keyes's obvious need to stereotype races. Oh, and having read Rachel's Holiday, I have detected a pattern in Keyes's writing -- a pattern that I cannot discuss for it might spoil the plot.
Funny, charming, and as resistible as it is addicting, Lucy Sullivan should be on every woman's reading list. That is if you're in the mood for good British humor.
