Giblin's ( Chimney Sweeps: Yesterday and Today ; The Truth About Santa Claus ) simplified yet well-rounded portrait of Washington offers considerable insight into the private man. During his early years on a Virginia farm, Washington was devoted to his half-brother, Lawrence, who went on to own Mount Vernon. After Lawrence's death, Washington married Martha Custis and farmed the Mount Vernon land until he was appointed Commander in Chiefstet of the country's armed forces. Giblin describes Washington's triumphs and hardships during the Revolutionary War, and the many crucial decisions made during his two terms as the country's first President. The appealingly informal text is laced with engaging details: Washington had a hard time with spelling as a child; he refused to accept pay for his military services; and the reason he looks so serious in his celebrated portrait by Gilbert Stuart is that his dentures--made from hippopotamus teeth--were hurting that day. Sharing the credit for the book's success are Dooling's vivid, beautifully textured oil paintings, which add drama to the story of this modest, fair and ultimately devoted man. Ages 5-8.

Grade 1-3-- A clearly written, dramatically illustrated book about the important events in and achievements of our first president's life. Mentioned are some of the issues with which Washington grappled (states' rights as opposed to a strong federal government; the role of the United States in France's war with Britain). Giblin is fair and objective. He does not neglect the fact that Washington kept slaves at Mount Vernon, nor that his will set them free after his wife's death. Dooling's full-page oil paintings effectively evoke both the legendary aspects of his subject's character and life and the lesser-known parts, as a gentleman farmer and family man. In an appendix, Giblin debunks the story of the cherry tree, describes the monument, and gives a history of Mount Vernon following Washington's death. Adler's George Washington (Holiday, 1989) focuses more on the hero's early life and is not so well illustrated, so libraries needn't fear duplication. An overview, emphasizing Washington's love of home and family, plus his sense of duty to his country, and touching on significant personal and public events of his youth, leadership during the Revolution, and presidency. Dooling's oil paintings in dignified earth tones, impressionistically rendered but with a traditional flavor, are a fine complement to the text's warm, conversational tone. The brevity here skirts close to oversimplification, but Giblin wisely holds political material to a minimum--though he does mention Washington's ownership of slaves. Supplementary concluding material (``More About George Washington'') includes a chronology (however, days were removed, not added, in the calendar adjustment of 1752); the cherry tree myth; some of Washington's rules for behavior; and information about monuments and Mount Vernon. This book is visually stunning and provides an excellent overview of the life of George Washington. The pictures engaged my children (and myself) to the text. As a homeschooler, I was very impressed with the quality of this inexpensive book - a true treasure!

Wonderful Story and Stunning Illustrations...

Out of all the books we have read in honor of President's Day, this one stands head and shoulders above the pack. The story is superbly written and the illustrations by Michael Dooling are gorgeous. Giblin weaves from facts a story that is entertaining and educational. His writing personalizes the life of George Washington without getting too mushy for adults or too bogged down in language that children don't understand. He even debunks the myth of the cherry tree in a separate section entitled "More about George Washington". I originally borrowed this book from the library but purchased it here on Amazon to add to our personal collection. It's THAT good!

About the Author
Carlos M. Roithmayr is a senior aerospace engineer in the Systems Analysis and Concepts Directorate at the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. He earned a Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering degree at the Georgia Institute of Technology, both an M.S. and a Degree of Engineer in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University, and a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He began his career with NASA at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. His research interests include dynamics of multibody mechanical systems, spacecraft attitude dynamics and control, and orbital mechanics, and he has contributed to a wide variety of Agency projects and missions. He is author or coauthor of numerous refereed journal papers. Dr Roithmayr is a senior member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Dewey H. Hodges is a professor of aerospace engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He holds a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University. His research interests include aeroelasticity, structural mechanics, rotorcraft dynamics, finite element analysis, and computational optimal control. He has authored or coauthored five books and more than 200 technical papers in refereed journals. Professor Hodges is a Fellow of the American Helicopter Society, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Academy of Mechanics. He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Fluids and Structures, the Journal of Mechanics of Materials and Structures, and Nonlinear Dynamics.

Sussman's Last, Greatest Book

I've been a fan of Paul Sussman since his first book. The Labyrinth of Osiris is his most wonderful swan song. Paul corresponded with me after I wrote reviews of his other books and proved to be a truly amicable guy. I was so busy waiting for this book that I missed the notices of his sudden death at the tender age of 45, last May, from an aneurism. My heart was broken both because of the loss of his gentle, funny nature and his tremendous writing skills.

In Labyrinth of Osiris, he again features my favorite Luxor-denizen, Egyptian Detective Khalifa and his unusual friend, Israeli detective Ben-Roi. The two haven't been in contact much since their last case together but, once again begin concurrent cases in Egypt and Israel that squirm their ways together. As they work through both of their country's unbelievable bureaucracies to help one other, their friendship again blossoms. Their "racist" descriptions of each other are both wind-sucking and show their mutual affection. Khalifa is trying to discover what poisoned the water of a Christian household in Egypt, while Ben-Roi awaits the birth of his first child. Each fights the middle-aged crazies, while trying to understand their own lives and their own losses. Ben-Roi's case involves a famous journalist killed in Jerusalem's Armenian cathedral, while investigating a sex-slave ring, and a creepy international company, which seems above reproach, becomes a sleazy counterpart to be investigated as well. It is amazing what a truly great writer Sussman had become. If only we could look forward to more books by this man who truly transcended the Middle East mess, while adding a context that few of us knowThe Labyrinth of Osiris. Goodbye, Paul, I'll miss you! Thanks for such a great parting gift.

Historical fiction readers-Good reads

This is not for the uneducated. Nor is it just for the college crowd. A great read filled with mystery, religion, politics, and the true foundation of a friendship. If you are not familiar with Hebrew pronunciation (as I am not) or Arabic pronunciation fear not you will get through this book. This book has many turns and outcomes. Please give it a try you will not be disappointed in the end.

Paul Sussman, I will miss you!

Mr Sussman's final book does not disappoint. I enjoyed all of the books he gave the world. the characters become your friends and you cheer them on to the solution of the mystery. I was amazed at the way Mr Sussman brought so many disconnected pieces together at the end of the book. I was sorry to hear of his passing last year, my sympathies to his family.

William F. Bottke is the director of the Department for Space Studies at the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in Boulder, Colorado. Great teaching book

Great teaching book for beginners. Takes you to the basics from vowel sounds to structuring sentences. The only part of this book I didn't like was the fact it provided cassette tapes instead of audio CD. Really cassette tapes, I don't even have a player.

I will find this a useful book as I struggle to learn this difficult language. Apparently learning the grammar is very important in getting this right.
