Jealousy - hands down the worst emotion for any relationship, that is if it gets out of control. I was in a previous relationship where my ex-girlfriend was totally jealous and it completely crushed our relationship. Even worse, the jealousy sprouted out of nothing except the fact that she had been hurt by previous relationships which she brought into our relationship. Therefore, jealousy needs to be taken care of if you begin to feel it. This book gives you clear strategies on how to recognize it and immediately take action before gets worse. I like how you author begin the story with a realistic, and relatable situation from his life. I just wish it were a little longer and provided a few more examples throughout the book.

Jealousy can destroy even the strongest relationship if not handled. Letting your partner or yourself remain jealous and not getting to the bottom of it can take away the trust that you have established throughout your partnership. This book is a well thought out book about the topic as well as a sensible guide to understanding jealousy, the traits you or your jealous partner may possess and how to address and manage the issue. It is a practical approach to understanding why you might be feeling the way you do and it does not gloss over the topic by just telling you to put your feelings away. I really appreciate how much the author put into this book and I appreciate that he has shared his own experiences while showing how the techniques can be applied. I really enjoyed reading this book and I can see now how past relationships were destroyed with jealousy. I personally, walked away from this book feeling I can handle jealousy from friends as well as my life partner in a far more constructive way. Well worth the read even if you don’t think jealousy is an issue for you, you will be surprised by what you will learn.

My recent relationship was plagued with jealousy because of my boyfriend's trust issue and I told him many times that he should stop being so jealous. We talked about it a lot and I figured that his issues stemmed from his insecurities and that was the main thing he needed to work on - try to stop being so insecure. This book helped him rebuild his trust in people and we are a much happier couple now.

This volume in the Language Learning Monograph series discusses social aspects of language testing, which the authors see as encompassing assessment of socially situated language use as well as the social consequences and societal impact of language tests. At the micro level, the authors explore socially oriented language test constructs and the difficulties they pose for language testing theory and practice. They consider these issues in relation to language assessment in oral proficiency interviews, and to the assessment of second language pragmatics. At the macro level, the authors consider societal concerns with fairness and equity in testing, examining first traditional ways of ensuring test fairness, including bias analysis, differential item functioning, and sensitivity review. They subsequently take a close look at the use and misuse of language tests in implementing educational policy and their gatekeeping function in maintaining boundaries and constructing identities. They argue that both the consequences of test use and the broader societal functions of tests need to be taken into account if we are fully to understand the social dimension of language assessment.

About the Author
Tim McNamara is Professor of Applied Linguistics at The University of Melbourne, where he gained his Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics, and where he helped establish the Language Testing Research Centre, of which he was subsequently Director. His research interests include language testing, language teaching, and language and identity. His recent work has focused on the relevance of contemporary social theory to concerns in language assessment and other areas of applied linguistics, including the role of language tests in the processing of the claims of asylum seekers and in citizenship procedures. He is the author of "Language Testing" (2000) and has published widely in applied linguistics journals.

Carsten Roever is a Lecturer in Applied Linguistics at the University of Melbourne. He has a Ph.D. in Second Language Studies from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. His main research interest is the assessment of second language pragmatics. Some of his favorite topics are acquisition of pragmatic knowledge, second language aptitude, web-based language testing, and research design. He has published in "Language Testing," "Language Learning & Technology," and various edited collections.

Concise and Efficient

Like all of the "Oxford Introductions to Language Study", I found "Language Testing" to be both accessible and an informative, yet brief, introduction to the whole area of testing in language. Written with the absolute ignoramus in mind, (that would include me), McNamara's book is simply excellent.

Although it is not an in-depth analysis of the field, there is enough substance to give you a good overview and equip you with some of the more salient terminology and concepts. Lots of the terminology is printed in bold face, which makes it easy to highlight those words that will be used again and again throughout the book, and other books should you read more.

The book itself covers some of the history that has gone before us in testing, as well as chapters that discuss some of the issues facing test designers today. These include aspects like test design cycles, test validation, the rating process and more. There is also a good section of selected readings at the rear that relate to the chapters in the previous section.

Overall, if you are looking at beginning some reading on language testing, I would seriously recommend this book as the launching point. Pithy, concise and without a shred of waffling tripe, McNamara cuts to the chase effectively. It is a great book.

Short and to the point

This book is very short. That is a good and a bad thing.

It is good because the book strips down the elements of language testing to the bare essentials. Most of the important issues are dealt with, and all are dealt with succinctly and in plain language.

It is bad if, as a reader, you are hoping for an in-depth discussion of testing-related issues.

I read the book because it was a core text for a course I took as part of an MA Applied Linguistics. Each chapter served as a bare-bones introduction to the topic of the week. It served this purpose well, but it was necessary for my lecturer to supplement each chapter with other readings.

The book is a good introduction to language testing in the EFL/ESL environment, and did a good job of structuring the university course that I took. I'd recommend it for both of those purposes.

Perspective Matters

Testing in TESOL is, as seen by many in the area, a business. This book does not address this, but it does address concepts, construction, and considerations necessary for someone in the industry.

It looks at types of tests, tests that attepmy to assess various aspects of language (listening, speaking), and how valid tests are (test validity). If you are doing an MA in language teaching and are new to such concepts I would really suggest adding this to the cart. I think it is a great review regardless of your vantage point: excluding advanced authors in the field.

Why so expensive?

I don't understand why this book is so expensive. I have read it; the information is good, and yet not that difficult to find in other ways such as googling osteoporosis and calcium.

Save Your Money

This book is long on criticism, big on print, and short on supporting data or references.
It discredits much about the traditional approach to osteoporosis treatment--without giving sources or directed references to research that backs up the criticism. It also lacks supporting data for the effect of the Program on bone density or fracture risk. Maybe I missed it. If this info is in there, please direct me to it.
Strangely enough, the passage explaining how the program will benefit its audience (presumably, osteoporosis patients) does not mention bone, bone density, or fracture risk. Excerpted passage:
“Osteoporosis is in fact not really a disease but rather the body’s attempt to correct a certain biochemical imbalance in body tissues. This imbalance can be reversed by mainly following simple dietary guidelines that are explained in great detail in a later chapter.”
I missed the simple guidelines. There was a lot of nutritional info with diet suggestions, many recommended supplements, and some information about the alkaline diet, but I didn’t see a simple, straightforward Program to follow.
For some reason, the author intentionally neglected to mention anything about bone density or fracture risk in discussing what her Program will do. Odd for a program called "Save Our Bones!"
• Why might that be?
• If the author had references to solid data backing up her bold-sounding claims, why wouldn’t she include them? That would only help patients and help sell her Program.
