A useful guide to Jamaica's most common medicinal plants

Common Medicinal Plants of Portland, Jamaica (2nd Edition). Austin, Summer and Michael B. Thomas, eds. 2010. CIEER (Centre for International Ethnomedicinal Education and Research), Inc. i-vii + 102 pp (paperback). ISBN 978-0-9729594-0-7.

This book edited by Summer Austin and Michael B. Thomas is a useful guide to 47 of Jamaica's most common medicinal plants, each discussed under the categories of botanical description, plant part(s) used, preparation method(s), and use(s), and all the plants are nicely illustrated with a black and white photograph and drawing. Its focus is Jamaica's mountainous, wet, heavily forested northeastern parish of Portland and the community represented is the Windward Maroons. In fact, the Preface is written by Colonel Wallace G. Sterling, the Leader of the Windward Maroons, and two of the three principal Jamaican collaborators--Lloyd Harris and Lloyd G. Henry--are Maroon herbalists. The third collaborator who did the drawings is a Portlander described as a local artist, craftsman, environmental educator, and activist.

This book is a reliable guide based on the fieldwork of Summer Austin who was a Peace Corps worker in Portland. The text is well written. Voucher specimens were collected and the plants were identified with the assistance of George Proctor and Keron Campbell of the Institute of Jamaica herbarium. In addition to being a reliable guide for researchers, the book (and its interactive website) was also intended to be a "permanent documentation" of Maroon medicinal plants to serve "as a useful educational tool for local schools, regional training programs such as healthcare workshops, and teacher training programs" (p. vii).

Given the importance of the Maroons in Jamaica's history and culture--Nanny of the Windward Maroons being the only heroine of the seven "National Heroes"--an introduction to the Maroons and the mountainous landscape that was essential to their successful resistance to slavery in Jamaica would have been a welcome addition to the book.

Common Medicinal Plants of Portland, Jamaica is much more a report on plant use based on interviews with herbalists rather than an assessment of medicinal plant use in Jamaica based on a review of the large number of studies done by independent scholars and researchers of the University of the West Indies. One of several glaring omissions from the references is Payne-Jackson and Alleyne's 2004 book Jamaican Folk Medicine: A source of Healing (published by the University of the West Indies Press).

One cannot help wondering if it is appropriate to refer to "common medicinal plants of Portland" when the plants discussed include such familiar economic plants like mango, banana, avocado, guava, and the like. Would it not be more accurate to refer to plants used medicinally in Jamaica including medicinal plants proper?

Brilliant.

I'm an obsessed horror fan and I read everything I can get my hands on, but oddly enough I don't care for vampire fiction all that much. It's a subject that's been done to death in my opinion and as a rule it kind of bores me. (With some exceptions, of course.) For years, I passed over Martin's FEVRE DREAM, thinking it was just "another vampire novel". But if you are lucky to come across a copy of this novel, don't make the same mistake I did. FEVRE DREAM is far more than just a vampire novel. It is a brilliant novel, period. I was so spellbound by this book, my house could have fallen down around me while I was reading it, and I probably would not have noticed. By the time I turned the last page, it had ranked itself as one of the best novels I have ever read. George R.R. Martin skills as a storyteller are unparalleled. I'm actually jealous of the fantasy and sci fi fans who've had his attention over the years. FEVRE DREAM has all the elements of the great classics of literature: larger than life characters, a perilous journey, and a story that sweeps you away like the river it is set upon... In a nutshell, it is a tale of vampires clashing on a steamboat in the 1850's. Two "bloodmasters", Joshua York and Damon Julian, are on a collision course of ideals and philosophy, and God help all those who are witness to it. The river will run with blood before it is all over... I'll never forget the cast of characters: the cruel and sick Sour Billy, the beloved curmudgeon Cap'n Abner Marsh, Hairy Mike Dunn, Joshua York, or Tobey the cook. I have never used the word "masterpiece" in a book review, but this book merits the term. Highest recommendation. You'll never forget this book once you turn the last page, I guarantee it.

Wonderful!

This unique novel is definitely one of the best I've ever read. It's a completely different take on the legend of vampires. Martin's vampires are not undead humans, but rather the remains of an ancient warrior species similar to, but, in some ways different from, man. His vampires don't sleep in coffins, nor are they vulnerable to things like garlic and holy water. They are, however, light sensitive, and, most importantly of all, they have a thirst for blood. It's the struggle of one of these vampires to lift the curse of that thirst that drives the story. "Fevre Dream", though, isn't really about vampires, it's about the struggle for acceptance, and, most of all, friendship. It's the friendship between the crusading vampire and an old Mississippi riverboat captain named Abner Marsh that is the center of this fast-moving tale. Martin creates a wonderful sense of atmosphere throughout, with his story racing through a background of life on the Mississippi river in the 19th Century. The author keeps us interested throughout with a series of twists and turns that throw our two friends together, tear them apart, then toss them together again as they join the struggle to end the thirst and bring vampires as much into the human world as possible. And, the last few pages are simply some of the most touching prose I've ever read. A super read. If you can get a copy, do so, though I'm certainly not giving up mine. Oh, and I e-mailed the author a few years ago to complement him on this work. I was shocked that he wrote me back and said that he's been considering a sequel to "Fevre Dream". We'll have to wait, though, as he mentioned that he would be tied up with a fantasy series, which turned out to be the excellent "Song Of Fire And Ice." We'll wait, George, and thanks.

A murky myth with Twain twists

I probably first read this book about 16 years ago or so. Picked it up on a whim at the library and it has been on my recommended list ever since(although the publisher seems to have thought otherwise.) I am fascinated with the vampire myth and this novel was the first to make me realize how adaptable the myth was - Anne Rice's often brillant concepts aside. Every thing changes so why not the vampire's legend? Being 1999 I can't remember the specifics , I just remember it was a rousing read that caused me to ignore all my mundane duties at the time and read it straight through. I was greatful that it also made George R.R. Martin a name that I would look for in the future when looking for a good read. My wife and I became fans of the early television episodes of Beauty and the Beast and imagine my surprise when I realized my favorite episodes were penned by George R.R. Martin ( the episodes that dealt with character developement and ambiance, not the ones given to unadulterated trash romance.) I soon made sure I read all that Martin had written and I'm looking forward to the to reading the Clash of Kings follow-up. Fevre Dream is an atmospheric cruise down the nether regions of the Mighty Muddy. I also want to thank Amazon for the chance to expound on an out of print novel. Service and appreciation of the medium, whether it be print or audio is a commendable trait seldom found in today's retail world.

Great motivator

I would suggest to read "Losing my virginity" first so you get a better understanding of Branson's life. I did it the other way unfortunately. During his book he will tell various stories about his life that affected his way of thinking. It's a good motivation book for anyone considering his/her own business. The most important lesson (aside other great ones) that I took with me: Do it for fun - not for money! And he is damn right.

I strongly recommend this book even if you do not open your own business.

This is an enjoyable light read. While he covers his life and his lessons learned, I enjoyed catching his attitude--one of bringing fun to business. I'm on my second reading of it now--so that says something.

This is a very interesting and informative book. Richard Branson is not trying to sell anything; he's just explaining how he came to be what he is today.

Branson is completelly right that people must have fun with whatever they do. Otherwise, they will become miserable robots regreting missed opportunities one day.

Cute gift

I got this for my wife as a gift on Valentine's Day (though not all she got). It was very cute and she enjoyed it even more than I expected. I guess it's basically formatted like a children's book, but cute. It begins with "Me without you is like...", the next page is "... sky without blue", and then every following page has some other little rhyming comparison, such as "hair without do", "ghost without boo", "kung without fu", etc., and just keeps going on and on like that for every page, each with a little illustration.

I bought this book for my boyfriend for Valentines day. Its really long and my favorite references were the Doctor Who ones and the Harry Potter ones! Its just a really cute and simple way to say when we're not together I'm not complete!

This is a great little book that works as a perfect gift or reminder to tell someone you care about them. The illustrations are cute and every page rhymes. I gave it as a gift to my girlfriend and she loves it. It's something we'll keep out, lying around for a quick glance when we need a pick me up.

Michelle Langenberg is a prize-winning poet, editor, artist, teacher, Alzheimer care provider, and Master Reiki healer. Connecting the Dots to a Revised Reality

As the 20th century unfolded, traditional Christian beliefs began more and more to undergo historical challenges. Raising thorny questions were Albert Schweitzer’s book The Quest of the Historical Jesus, the discovery of the Dead Sea scrolls, the artifact discoveries at Nag Hammadi, and, more recently, such groundbreaking books as Reza Aslan’s Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth. As the Biblical depiction of an anthropomorphic God presiding over a three-tiered universe began to crumble for the inquiring mind, where could one, who wished to retain a spiritual connection, turn? How could one embrace scientific advancements and yet preserve some remnant of religion? Enter “Quantum God.”

The revelations of quantum mechanics yielded a fertile field for thinkers, physicists and authors such as Amit Goswami, Jeffery Love, Bruce Rosenblum and Fred Kuttner, to name only a few, who began to explore a new perspective on the relationship between matter and consciousness. And the implications thereof for an overarching Creative Intelligence infused throughout the universe. It is within this stream of thought and vision that Michelle Langenberg and her book Quantum God: How Life Really Works belong, comprising a significant contribution to furthering an understanding of the particulars of this concept.

A prize-winning poet, editor, artist, teacher, Alzheimer care provider and Master Reiki healer, Langenberg has drawn on life experience and done her homework regarding the subject, the bibliography and citation notes comprising nearly a booklet in and of themselves. And her sources, ranging over a host of references, include The New Testament, the Tao Te Ching, the Qur’an, Yogananda, Einstein, Jane Roberts, Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer, C.S. Lewis, Cole’s The Hole in the Universe, Goswami’s The Self-aware Universe, Toben’s Space-Time and Beyond, Wilber’s Quantum Questions, Herbert’s Quantum Reality, Wheeler and Zurek’s Quantum Theory and Measurement, Talbot’s The Holographic Universe as well as many anecdotes from her personal experience illustrating the points under discussion. If one were to infer from the aforementioned names and titles that one focus of Langenberg’s goal here is to seek common ground between science and spirituality, that inference would indeed be warranted. But Quantum God extends beyond that, offering a great deal more.

Langenberg begins by demonstrating why a literal interpretation of Biblical scripture has become passée in the 21st century and then commences to lay the groundwork for an alternative view that surprisingly retains much of value from such sacred texts. Quoting from A Course in Miracles, she proposes that we come from a Source that only creates like Itself and therefore we become “co-creators” of all that is. We are, then, aspects of the Divine. And certain corollaries follow from this, such as, for example, we are all connected. Or, anything physical begins as a mental concept. Or, time does not move absolutely in only one direction. And, most importantly, we literally create our own reality. She bolsters these assertions with sidebar illustrations like the “Necker Cube,” which demonstrates the phenomenon of a “quantum jump.”

She goes on in successive chapters to convey how everything “physical” is actually vibrating energy, composed of units termed “quanta.” And quanta can behave like waves or like particles, which leads in actuality to unlimited possibilities such as an electron being in two places at once. Furthermore, quoting Fred Alan Wolf from Parallel Universes, “What’s true for the tiny electron is true for all of the objects within the material universe, since all things are made up of electronlike things.” That, then, introduces the idea that all things, if believed by the observer, are really and truly possible and “miracles” become natural phenomena within human experience. So that’s how Jesus did it! Mind-boggling stuff!

The book is divided into three sections. The first defines, explains and elaborates upon the implications of the quantum concept as applied to our everyday lives. The second offers practical suggestions for utilizing its principles to better our experience and relationships. For example, making personal peace a priority. Or, always positioning ourselves in win/win situations. Finally, the third is the appendix containing a plethora of fascinating related information such as the Indian health-maintenance system of Ayurveda, yin/yang balancing, meditation techniques, blessings, affirmations and universal variations on the Golden Rule.

However, in the end we still might ask, who or what exactly is this “Quantum God”? Perhaps, Langenberg suggests, Rabbi David Cooper’s definition of God as a Verb is insightful? God-ing. Quantum God as energy-in-action? Or perhaps, she declares, “God is a concept, a Force, the process of Manifestation, communication, and life.” But ultimately, she concludes, “The fact is that God is to each of us whatever we think God is…and more.” Emphasis on the word think.

Langenberg’s writing is conversational, yet articulate and precise. If there’s any fault, it might be her tendency at times to hurry through allusions to various thinkers in a short span without expanding fully on their contribution to the question being discussed–-in one instance she mentions Jesus, Buddha, Einstein, Plato, Hindus, Rod Serling, The Matrix movie, Adam, Nero and a Taoist parable in slightly more than a page. But that’s a picayune quibble what with her abundance of wisdom to share and only so much space to do so. What Langenberg has given us is a superb overview and analysis of this new combination of scientific and theological thought by connecting the dots to a revised reality. A most worthy addition to the field’s body of literature.
